Finding Clothes and Shopping Online in Japan For Foreigners

If you are interested in going to Japan to live or work long-term and happen to not be slim or short, then you've probably wondered how you will find clothing. Well it is possible but it will be challenging.

It's much easier to buy clothing from American stores here if you're a foreigner. SO the sport is mainly focused on those options.
You will also begin shopping online more often than usual especially if you don't speak Japanese it will be much easier to find what you're looking for. Plus since the shipping is so fast it would only make sense to buy everything you need from your phone or computer.

Of course you can say or think whatever you'd like but in my honest opinion online shopping will become your new best friend for several different reasons. There are pros and cons to shopping online of course but it is your safest bet and for some of you, your only hope of being able to purchase new clothing.

However I don't want to limit this post to just clothing. I recommend that you buy furniture and home goods online as well (even groceries). This way you don't have to carry large items on the train, hail a taxi home or attempt to arrange delivery with a store which can be very difficult if you lack the appropriate and much needed Japanese language skills (you could have a friends or boyfriend/girlfriend help you with this though).

A Few (A Lot Of) Points...

Japanese people are very fashion conscious. There's an exception to every rule but people here care about fashion trends and their outward appearance including makeup and hair a lot! Even men take fashion and hair very seriously.

Because Japanese people care so much about fashion you will find yourself caring more about your appearance too.

Personally I began wearing dresses skirts and more "fashionable" clothing". Ironically I get soo many compliments from natives and foreigners alike even although 90% of my wardrobe is Hot Topic, Forever21, H&M, Target and Walmart brand clothing!

Most Japanese clothing stores are run and designed like high end or vintage fashion boutiques. There are usually 2-4 staff members in a tiny store dressed professionally (sometimes even wearing gloves). They will typically only display one of each item and the clothing is spaced on the racks. The staff in these store are a bit more vocal (often times more annoying) and will offer their help and opinions similarly to American retailers around Christmas.

If you wear anything above an XL whether you are a man or a woman you can't find clothing in even an American store. You might find a few odd items that you can squeeze yourself into but it won't be easy.

If you already wear an Extra Small, Small, or even a Medium you can shop at most Japanese stores for you clothing. However a medium in Japan is viewed as a large so occasionally you may also have trouble finding clothing that fits you properly particularly if you're a woman.

Men generally won't have a hard time finding clothing as mens clothing is usually loosely fitted to some degree (even slim fit clothing). However if you're a tall man or have a gut you may find that the length is an issue thus specialty store and once again online shopping are your 2 options. Also you might as well give upon finding shoes if your an average sized man in the United States you're a giant here. Japanese men aren't just shorter but they have smaller hands and feet than MOST Americans. If you wear above a size 10 as a man you may have trouble finding shoes.

Yes losing some of that blubber will most certainly help you fit into the clothing here especially if you're a dude however if you are a woman this may not be the case for you when it comes to certain pieces such as dresses, skirts, and jeans. Asian women are generally very slim and lack curves. Most Japanese girls have a slim rectangular shape. So even if you do find clothing that fits or that is even too big for you it will never get past your hips and even the largest of bras might not be able to clasp around your ribcage/back.

Unless you're a total freak you will lose weight once you come here. I lost about 25 lbs. in 7 months (without any effort) since I came in December. I did this without changing my diet or exercising purposefully. You will find yourself walking so much and because the food here is not high in calories, sugar, or salt you will not be very interested in eating or even drinking as much as you were once used to.
Not that the food here isn't delicious but not all of it is very enticing or addictive either. Eating rice for every meal gets old real fast...

Wanna lose a little weight? Drink mostly water or unsweetened hot tea, Take the stairs and avoid the escalators, go for a late evening or early morning walk/run, join a gym. If you have a car don't use it ride your bike or walk.

One Size Fits All or Most is very commonly seen. If you ask staff about sizing or if they have a large size for the item you are pointing at or holding they will kindly tell you that they don't carry a larger size. XL is hard to find for both genders (and it's a Japanese sized Extra Large).
Sizes are not usually openly displayed like they are in America which can make shopping a bit confusing. Instead you have to examine the piece of clothing and search for the size tag usually inside the piece on the back of the inner neck (wow that was a lot to type for one point). Of course you can also use common sense usually the largest size will be in the back of the smaller ones. In my experience from shopping for men, men's clothing in anything over a U.S Large is hard to find. Most Japanese clothing for men would fit an XS-M  man in America.

7/11 has emergency clothing such as camisoles, tank tops, and T-shirts in white up to a size Large.

Women of color can find makeup such as concealer and foundation almost any pharmacy that sells drugstore makeup.  *Shades only go as dark as caramel like myself*
TIP: Purchase online from major makeup brands and you can have your correct shade sent to your front door.

Women of color can also find pantyhose at 7/11 *Shades only go as dark as caramel like myself*
TIP: Purchase online from major makeup brands and you can have your correct shade sent to your front door.

As for ladies shirts that stretch and socks are the only things you can buy without hesitation in most situations. Anything that's a bit fitted like skirts jeans and dresses you can forget about it!

Japanese women are on average shorter than MOST American women. The average height here is about 5'2 so clothing is made to fit women close to this height. I am 5'4 and haven't had any problems with the length of clothing.
HOWEVER I do notice that the sleeves are often shorter and jewelry comes in smaller sizes as Japanese women (men too) have smaller hands etc..
If you wear above a size 7 shoe then you may have trouble finding shoes.

SO be mindful of arm and leg lengths.

If you are curvy you can forget about buying a fitted dress, a skirt with a zipper or non stretch pants.
I have very wide hips and even although I usually wear a size Large not even a 2XL here could fit over my hips. An Extra Large and Large generally fit me just fine in most clothing despite what I was told before I came here.

You should try to dress modestly but classy as a man or a woman. However many people dress immodestly but it's not as commonly done as it is in America. It's okay to show off legs and even arms  but I can count the times that I've seen cleavage here. Because you're a foreigner people will be more judgmental of your outfit choices. Maxi dresses and skirts are very fashionable and commonly worn here.

Most people especially women tend to dress like Americans did in the 70's and 80's. It is sometime hard not to laugh at their outfit choices but I'm sure they feel the same way about Americans.

Payment Options

Despite what you've read or have been told you can use credit and debit card here in Japan.Debit cards are easier to use. Most clothing stores whether they're Japanese or American will accept them.VISA & MasterCard (preferably VISA) is your safest bet. Be sure to contact your bank to update your address or for them to put a travel note on your account to avoid unapproved transactions and future embarrassment and humiliation like I experienced.

COD: I don't use this method personally but it's a great option if you'd rather use cash for your purchase should you not have a card or not have enough money on it at the moment. I recommend using exact change or smaller yen to avoid having problems as they delivery-dude may not have enough change to break a 10,000 yen for a 1,500 yen purchase! Also if you happen to not be at home they can't leave your package with anyone unless the person answering the door has the money to pay on your behalf. *Cash on Delivery! COD! That's LAW!*

Arranged Delivery Day & Time: You can arrange a specific delivery date and time of day such as before 12:00PM or between the hours of 6:00-9:00PM. This is very helpful especially if you work or are a student like me you can leave home without having to question and wonder whether or not you will be home in time to receive your packages.

LINE Pay: Similar to PayPal this is another way to skip having to enter all of your cards details. I use this method the most for smooth and easy online shopping. Its a treasure when you find stores that offer it at checkout!

Delivery: In  generally anything you but online from a Japanee store will arrive at your day in 2 days no more than 3 days from the date of your purchase. Most items ship the day you purchase them and because Japan is such a small country with less than half of the American population, most people live in Tokyo, most businesses have their factories, headquarters and warehouses in Tokyo and because you probably live in Tokyo yourself, items can be delivered much faster. Which is great!

PayPal: This online money service is available in Japan too! Sign up for one touch to make your mobile checkout easy for future purchase but be sure to update your address and acrd information if necessary!

Your Personal Saviors...

Online Shopping

I highly recommend that you shop from these stores to have clothing and miscellaneous items shipped directly to your front door. Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, JC Penney, Forever21, H&M, AliExpress and last but definitely not least Amazon.

The American stores such as Target do charge a hefty shipping fee starting at about $50 USD however it is worth it considering it's convenience and the fact that whatever you just purchased from their websites is probably nonexistent in Japan or very hard to find in Japan. There is no Walmart or Target here, and there's no store that is even remotely close to or comparable to either of the them sadly (Amazon is as close as you can get and ehh Costco too technically). Walmart unfortunately doesn't ship to Japan.

Forever21 (Japan)

One of the few American store here that actually have a warehouse and multiple physical stores located within the country. The clothing is mostly the same as what you are used to seeing in America. Just like in America people talk crap about this store and H&M referring to it is cheap and unfashionable however I can't tell you how many time I have been complimented for wearing their clothing! Most of my clothing comes from F21 & HotTopic and I wouldn't have it any other way.
COD, arranged delivery and LINE pay/check out are all options for making purchases. I was amazed that I could use the LINE app by simply adding my credit card information and using my thumb on my iPhone 7 Plus.

Amazon

Is amazing here! You will have to make a new account with a new email as you can't use your U.S account here in Japan. So either create or use your alternative email to sign up. You will have new fancy options that have both both never existed in America and that have disappeared due to lack of  morals and safety concerns. COD or cash on delivery as well as well as the ability to pick both a delivery date and time (yes you read that correctly) is an option when checking out. As per usually you can also use the one-click buy option and save address and credit card information for future use. The option to subscribe and save is also available.
You will soon become a bit annoyed with not being able to purchase a lot of stuff from your home country as the seller doesn't ship to Japan. You an usually find the item through another Japanese seller but the price is usually crippled for profit.

TIP: Have a Japanese friend help you sign up for the account if you can't read in Japanese OR even better download Google Chrome for your cellphone (like I did) or tablet and go to Amazon's or F21's website NOT the app and you can request that the page is translated into English automatically! Problem solved! This also works for general online shopping in Japan even for ordering food. Check out this post for more information on that subject!
Also consider purchasing items from store that don't offer international shipping to Japan and have them sent to a trusted friend or family member in your home country. You can then have them ship the items directly to you in Japan.
You can also try using a third party shipping agency that is based in America at your own risk should you want to purchase personal items or lack family and friends that can help you.

Shopping In Store

The only exception!
If you absolutely must shop in person you will fall in love with Uniqlo (my favorite). This store is like the Old Navy of Japan. They sell trendy clothing that's reasonably price and have good sales occasionally.  It's not a "cool" clothing store amongst the Japanese natives but who cares?! Clothes are clothes and only you know where they came from!
You may have noticed a few of these stores popping up in major cities in America such as Chicago recently.

Uniqlo sales clothing for all ages babies, kids, teens, and adults. They are a huge chain retailer and often have multiple floors of fashionable clothing in both small and extended sizes. You can also try on clothing in their fitting rooms. In general you can easily find sizes up to a U.S XL equivalent and occasionally a 2X. Anything above an XL there is no guarantee. They have a wide range of fashions selling both casual and business casual clothing

Forever21 and H&M are two more options for shopping in store. However if you wear anything above a U.S Large as a man or a woman, you will have very limited to no options at these stores. Unlike in America there is NO plus size section in store or online.

There's more to it!

This post will be updated in the future, as I am sure that there are other foreign and Japanese stores to shop at here online and in person.

Please share your shopping experience or any tips that you have for other people looking for clothing in the comments below.

The Not Sakura House Sendagaya 4-chome Kinda Slam Book (Why I HATE This Place And I am Moving Out)

This post is not a review of Sakura House. If you are looking for a review I will have a new post in the near future. This post is about what annoyed me here at Sakura House Sendagaya 4-chome.
So of course it's a petty over the top and dramatic rant because I am only focusing on the negative things for this post. I was going to take pictures of the annoyances faces and mention first names but that's a step too far. I'm not even THAT petty and shallow.

Anyway I stayed in the Basement floor of the B-Unit. It is technically an "all girls" (girls only) floor, but transgender men live her too... so theoretically it's still a mixed dorm.

I can imagine that the actual mixed floors in the building were much worse, noisier ( I can hear them at night), and dirtier.

I always considered myself to be patient. If people ask me to wait for them or to be understanding I am very quick to be a "yes man" and simply agree and reassure them that it is not a problem. Well after spending almost a year at Sakura House not to mention dealing with the difficult passive side of Japanese natives I have finally reached my limit with patience and have come to the conclusion that I am far from being consider as "patient" and not easily angered.... at least by the standards here.
I always hate that people will push your buttons provoke you, irritate you and insist that you take the bait they have set before you and then the moment you complain, you are mean, rude, impatient, and hate people blah blah blah.
Well now that this cold opening is out of the way we can get to why I had to leave Sakura House.
To be completely honest my main motivation to leave was simply to have privacy so I can walk around in my panties and cami with a messy bun without a care in the world, while taking random pictures, recording my cats, making blog posts, studying, and of course and MOST importantly to make new videos for YouTube!
So I will list my reasons for why I had to leave this gaijin complex very simply and then elaborate on them below.

As I will always continue to say Sakura House is truly a blessing to foreigners all over the world who would like to visit Japan. They offer affordable housing with very little required from you. You can quickly arrange your housing with them and the houses are in great locations, mostly in or near the downtown areas of major cities such as Tokyo.
I would have been lost and probably unable to stay in Japan if it weren't for this company. However I must admit that there are things that I found unbearable both on the companies behalf and on the behalf of my roommates.

The staff is usually very phony and friendly as all good customer service associates should be HOWEVER most of their office staff is not Japanese but Chinese, and some Europeans (as well as other Asians) that make up the entire team.  I've never had a problem with the Japanese staff which are stereotypically known for providing great service but occasionally the other staff can come off as not so friendly and in this case rude.

As I am typing this my rent is late and I had the absolute worse customer service experience EVER. I kept a calm tone of voice and this chick just went crazy on me. She continued to talk over me and was very disrespectful. I asked for her manager and as expected was given "the run around".
I felt as though I were being treated like a criminal. I will upload a video to YouTube later explaining what happened.

Anyway after temporarily solving my issue, I came to the conclusion that I need to stop delaying making this post and to simply finish it tonight ASAP.

Once again this rude staffer, Hwang is not my only reason for leaving she just pushed me to decide that this gaijin project didn't deserve my yen whether it be on time or late. I've been a tenant for almost a year and I've almost always had nothing but positive encounters with their staff but now I see that they don't play when it comes to getting their money, even if its just a few days late and you TELL them when you will pay and have accepted the fact that you must pay a late fee. I even had to sign a new lease basically saying I can't pay my rent late again even although it was an emergency situation and I was only a week late. I ALWAYS pay my rent to them. I have too much stuff to just get up and run back to America.
I mainly just wanted space and privacy. This was all I needed to quit being lazy and actively look for a new apartment.

99.9% of the people living here being adults ages 20 and over I can't blame Sakura House for their not so good and sloppy tenants but they are by far the most annoying thing in the world to deal with.

Personally I have never really had roommates in America, but I am aware of how bad they can be. I've stayed at 2 hostel rooms and I've been to summer camp about 5 or 6 times. I am well aware that everyone has their own pet peeves and quirks etc.. I am also aware that almost everyone knows about these horrendous bad, creepy, sloppy, stinky and annoying roommate stereotypes, but as always common sense just isn't that common anymore.

I think my floor was the calmest in the entire building because it was technically female only (I will explain this later in another post).

The House Is Disgusting

Unless you move in or wake up on a Wednesday afternoon, the house is infested with germs, bacteria, long hairs everywhere, dishes filled in the sinks and on table tops, dirty surfaces and even chairs. Everyone points fingers and plays the "it wasn't me game" this forces everyone to decide "do we clean up behind them and they never learn their lesson or just wait until every dish and clean table space is covered in filth?"
Actually I question how clean the supplies is that they use since I swear nobody has replaced our house mop or toilet brushes since I arrived here almost a year ago!

The Tenants Are Even More Disgusting

There's no way to say this without seeming racist or referencing stereotypes but honestly I'm not in the mood for politically correct bullshit at the moment. Asians are stereotypically clean and germaphobes, (according to American culture at least) that is how they are portrayed. Even when I watch tv like NHK or read cultural books and articles on Asia it's commonly something clean, health related etc.. While I will say overall Japanese people fit this mold that cannot be said about the rest of Asia. Now keep in mind yes this is a small group of people. Not all of China or Malaysia blah blah blah I know I know but most of Sakura House's tenants are Asian because well this is Asia and Japan is very close to China. I will also add that the European men here are stereotypically ridiculously loud and rude at night. The Harajuku police have been called countless times because they are drunk and partying at 2-3AM! This is part of why most places don't rent to "foreigners.

The things that I find most bothersome are

1.) Look At Meh Big Toe!

There is a Chinese-Canadian girl clipping her nasty fucking toenails at the kitchen table at almost 3AM! She's putting the clippings on the chair beside her, massaging her nasty stank foot, and she has her toe up to her nose (seriously) and is catfishing guys on Steam.

2.) People put their nasty feet on everything but the floor.

Girls put their feet on the fridge, couch, kitchen chairs, coffee table  etc.. And when they aren't putting their feet on something or somewhere they don't belong, they are rubbing them and then touching everything afterwards. It's so gross! This is not your home and you were just walking on the floor. Wear house shoes or footies the floor is for feet people sheesh!

3.) Nobody washes their hands!

I have no idea how e-coli, food poisoning and death-by-bacteria lol is not more common in Asia. People seldom wash their hands. Not when they touch their feet, pick their noses, scratch, or even go to the bathroom!
The soap here isn't good to begin with, handsanitizer is also not common or even available at most public places. I was OCD and a bit of a germaphobe before I came here and thought because of the fairytales I read about and even the Asian news stations and programs that I watched that it would be so clean here. I will say that this is not just an Asian issue. White Europeans here seem to also not be on board to hand washing as about 70% of them in our house don't. My white American friend and I both joked about this. Since I am the only black girl on my floor the only statistic I have for you is that I am the mean stereotypical "black bitch" of Sakura House since I hardly speak to anyone. I've had 3 REAL friends since I moved here, my Chinese mom, Danish little sister, and my American son.

Japan is physically clean in appearance but when you think about the fact that the most basic step to being clean, cleansing one's hands is not common practice it makes me wonder if the lack of hand washing is the reason why people need so many wet napkins, towels, and boiling hot steam baths every evening to rid themselves of their filthy hands.

4.) People are so Inconsiderate, rude and dumb.
This bright ass light is coming from my roommates who isn't even at her desk but left this on for when she comes back it's 2AM!

The girls here aren't only dirty but they don't think about or care about anyone but themselves. If you have roommates and decide to be selfish you are asking for problems. When I first moved in here I had 2 Chinese roommates 1 from China 1 ethnically Chinesse but Malaysian (kinda like me being African-American but they don't use the hyphen thingy to my knowledge, that's off subject so anyway). The girl would stay up until 3-4AM leaving the main room light on. Even with my curtains (which do a pretty good job blocking out the light) it was still bothersome and made sleeping difficult most of the time. Also the annoying mouse clicks and typing on a keyboard when everyone is sleep after midnight is simply disrespectful. I am a student so I understand that you may have work to do but she was mostly just on Facebook and listening to random Asian covers of American songs which were mostly good (I must admit she had great taste in music too) but still you can easily go sit in the living room on the couch go to the kitchen table or even to McDonalds to use your laptop, phone etc.. and you can use as much light as you want!

Everybody has an outlet with 2 charge ports and a desk area with 2 sockets to charge their devices. The kitchen has 3 and the living room has an extension cord which belonged on the wall where it was hooked (it was moved to the ironing board as it kept falling) but these 2 girls got the dumb idea to drag it on the floor across the room to charge their phones and computers SMH then they have the audacity to not even put it back where it belongs but instead stash it on the filthy floor. The ironing board is dirty enough now once it is placed back where it belongs it will be adding more filth. Thanks!
The European girls on my floor were often the loudest and had occasionally had men over to help them move stuff around as well as to party which would be fine if this where not a GIRLS ONLY floor and this was your private apartment. A warning at the very least would be nice so that we could all be presentable.

One of my current roommates stay up until about 3AM and then has her alarm set for about 7 or 8 AM to the highest volume and it wakes up everyone in the room EVERY morning (except for me usually because I am such a heavy sleeper).  Set the volume low and at the very least please at least turn off your alarm quickly. It takes here several minutes to actually turn it off and its very annoying and rude (when I am awake).

5.) I've had people move around my groceries to fit their own even after we got assigned shelves

There are 3 fridges and about 20ish women living on my floor at any given time. It is understandable that the fridges get full and we run out of space. However its still annoying when people move your belonging to make space for their own and of course this isn't to say without dropping your food on the floor with or without your knowledge, damaging your goods or misplacing to were you can't find them or aren't even sure if it's your food or drink! This is a petty complaint but it gets bothersome really fast.

6.) Nobody ever takes out the garbage!
Whenever the dumpster duty girls don't take out their trash a random housemate will bag it up and tie it the place  it by the ironing board and front door

Every week 2 girls are selected for dumpster duty. They are expected to collect the garbage from the bins that are full and placed them in the designated location. You would think having a dumpster partner would make tis easy right? You can just rotate days or something. Well no. Instead neither girl will take out the trash. The living room and kitchen gets filled with overflowing trash cans "new bags" that just got started lined up with more garbage and then when someone has finally had enough they will place the bags outside and as soon as it rains the girls on garbage duty will get the "bright" idea to drag wet and stinky trash throughout the kitchen and living room.
Setting the trash outside may seem smart. Sure, we don't have to smell rotten sushi and naoto  BUT the heat and rain will enhance the funk once you get ready to take it out thus making the house stink even more. Plus you also risk forgetting that there is garbage outside in the first place.
I stopped talking to my former friend/roommate and we are always dumpster buddies I assume because she has top bunk and Sakura House wants to make it easy for themselves to schedule dumpster duty. Well since we don't talk I think she sometimes believes that I am a lazy hoe and don't take out the trash when it say turn and I do its just that I take out the trash when she isn't here to see me do it and it gets full so fast that by the time she notices it and seems like it was never done in the first place. I can't win. Sometimes I just tell her "I got it" so that she knows I will take out the garbage because it is my turn and I want to be fair.

7.) Obnoxious Phone Calls

Commonly (expectantly and understandably) girls will talk daily to their, friends, boyfriend etc. loud on their phones or even worse video chat on apps such as LINE and Skype. Its very annoying when you are trying to work or watch TV when theres 3 people talking in 7 different languages loudly over one another while you are trying to focus on whatever it is that you were doing. They seem to not have a care in the world or even notice that they are being rude and drowning out your program or breaking your concentration.
Video chats are even more annoying because most of the time its done in the kitchen and you have to walk through there constantly so you will be seen without a bra and makeup countless times without any warning or permission which I hate. This could easily be solved by lowering your voice and going to your own room to talk or even outside. Most of the girls who do this have single non-shared rooms! I can't understand why anyone would want to be in the living room or kitchen here if they didn't have to be. I only talk on the phone in the living room so I don't disrupt my roommates because I imagine me speaking loudly in English is like hearing tourists speak loudly in Chinese here.

8.) Why you do that?

The original Pet-peeve of mines is people leaving the microwave open instead of closing it once they are done warming up their food. Anything can get into the microwave if you leave it open like roaches, ant, debris, dirt etc.. Why would you do that?
People have a tendency to touch and unplug stuff that isn't theres. I was playing on my PlayStation in the living room as usual when my roommate that I can barely stand began rummage throw my CD's without asking for my permission. I've had my laptop unplugged before so someone could straighten their hair and she didn't even think to plug my shit back up once she was done! RUDE!
Girls also leave toiletries and clothing on the sink and it sucks if you need the space they're occupying OR if you accidentally knock over the cup crowding the sink on the floor into the nearby trash or into the actual sink and get it dirty or wet. Now I feel obligated to "do the right thing" and clean it and put it back. Just why?
However this quickly expanded into me questioning everything....

9.) Questionable Hygiene

Most people here don't wear deodorant and smell like tankage when they come home. They smell SOOO bad that even after they have showered the ENTIRE shower room wreaks of must that is soon strong not even air-freshner OR anti-bacterial spray gets rid of the funk. It lasts for days sometimes. It is so unbearable and cultural most of the people here don't wear deodorant so they are immune to their own funk.

I understand that it's convenient for you but why do these people was around barefoot when they get out the shower and track their nasty gaijin-paw prints everywhere?! Now the hallway floor is wet and soon become sticky because there is also hair, lint, and dirt on the floors so you're also tracking this into your bed. I just don't understand.

10.) You're Hot & Then You're Cold

The MOST annoying thing that has been consistently an issue here is that no-one can decide on what to do about the temperature.  The oldest resident on my floor is Malaysian yet she likes the cold even more than I do! She ALWAYS has the air on extremely low and cold temperature. She spent the entire year being sick. She is ALWAYS hacking, coughing, sneezing, and spitting up her lungs in the common sink like a chain smoker. I don't understand why she doesn't think that she is sick and simply stop blasting the AC.
The girls battle over the kitchen and living room's temp all the time. Some girls are used to hot whether and prefer to leave the AC off others turn off the AC and open the sliding doors, sometimes they stupidly open the doors and blast the AC which is pointless because now the air will escape out the doors. I can go on with the combinations of ignorance over the air.

I got really sick with strep throat back in April and because I didn't have health insurance and I don't speak Japanese fluently I was too chicken to go to the hospital so I self medicated at home. I was furious because I couldn't tell if I got sick from my nasty roommates germs spreading everywhere or from the AC being blasted over night and the doors being open in 50-60 degree weather. This ruined my Spring break. First world problem here but I've never been sick and treated myself naturally technically. I could only drink hot tea, hot water and eat a little ramen for about 2 weeks. I even lost weight but I felt horrible. It was so bad that I thought about going back to Chicago to get medical attention but I was too broke.

I always say I'd rather be cold than hot because I can always dress warmly I can wear layers and turn on the heat etc.. You can only remove so much clothing and even at homey can't remove your skin! Think about it...
There's a reason why Hell is supposed to be a punishment!

The Verdict

In conclusion the guests here and my roommates were overall EXTREMELY friendly. They were helpful to one another and greeted each other daily BUT roommates already suck and adding, cultural differences and language barriers just amplifies the bad parts of having a roommate ten fold.

It was an interesting experience and provided a new perspective on travel for me  but I have come to the conclusion that once I get my own apartment I most certainly will NOT ever have a roommate unless it is my boyfriend or husband. I can't deal with anyone else.

I learned to keep my mouth shut and make sacrifices to keep the peace. I finally passed the test. I learned to not be argumentative. I've spent almost an entire year without going off on anyone or complaining to any of my roommates. I tried to be an actual adult and solve issues with wise words and compromising.

This was a complaint post. Some of these things are universal I'm sure but others I have never dealt with in America.

The location and low cost is what makes people stay here. Sendagaya is a beautiful peaceful expensive residential neighborhood in Tokyo. Sakura House handles most of the expenses which also saves you money.
I have too many pet peeves and I am irritable and allergic to sever stupidity. This place just isn't for me.

I'm sure I missed some points here. If you happen to be staying at Sakura House or heck maybe your one of the annoying people I mentioned in my post feel free to bitch in the comments or add some other things you found to be annoying.

You can read my positive but neutral Sakura House Review (coming soon) to see all of the pro's and con's to living at Sakura House Sendagaya 4-chome. It's a mostly positive post. Use the search bar to find it.

A Secret Layer of Discrimination Against Foreign Students In Japan

I love Japan but this article will not be me kissing Tokyo's ass at least not today. Instead I want to talk to you about an issue that nobody really talks about much. You may think that you can just browse Gaijin Pot Apartments or go to Sakura House and yeah you're right but it's wrong and there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.

Sakura House is by far the easiest company to deal with here in Japan. They are easily the number one housing company for foreigners regardless of what country you came from (as long as it wasn't Japan) they have multi-lingual staff from all over the world who can help you find "the perfect place".  They don't ask any questions about how or where you are getting random amounts of money to pay for your housing and living expenses they don't monitor where you are working or studying no matter how long you plan to be a tenant. You could be an axe murder and drug lord for all they care or know.

This is fine if you only plan to live in Japan short-term but if you will be here for years or plan to move to Japan permanently you may have decided that you want something more affordable, spacious, and well just your own space period a.k.a an apartment and boy are you in for a mother-fucking ride!
Despite the fact that Gaijin Pot has thousands of apartment listings they nor the real estate agents and companies listed on their site lists arguably the most important disclaimer ( at least not to my knowledge anyway).

1.) You are basically wasting your time filling out the contact form because you are going to have to answer 100 more generic questions than they have listed there before they will even begin to work with you.

Okay no big deal. That's understandable they have to know who they're working with and want to make sure that you are not a psycho and that you are legitimately interested in moving blah blah blah.

I can't help but wonder that as the agent, don't you get tired of having to ask the same questions to every "dumb" foreigner who was looking at one of your listings? Then again I believe the replies are often copy and pasted.

2.) After telling them all of this you will soon find out that in Japan, American laws have no place in this country. Again that's understandable, but what's ironic is that they would be devastated if they were treated this way in the United States which makes me angry (I'm sure there's housing discrimination in the U.S against Japanese people too Captain Obvious but not on this level).
Anyway most housing companies are ALMOST like housing in the 40's or 60's in America for African-Americans and by that I mean landlords can discriminate against you solely based upon the fact that you are a foreigner and then even if you aren't being rejected because of your foreignness then you will be rejected for being a student. The difference between Japan 2017 and 1960's America is that it's totally legal and not some separate but equal under the table hushed bullshit this is a well known completely open fact in the housing market here (buying is another story but as far as renting goes this is your reality).
It's the landlords home they have a right to decide who lives there its as simple as that.

Now once again I'm going to play devils advocate here. I understand from personal experience that most foreigners here stereotypically and seemingly factually don't have a clue as to how to assimilate and "act Japanese" and are even criticized by their non-japanese peers for trying to (go figure), but it's unfair to judge an applicant without having even met them.
Also why am I being punished for being a student?  Again from their perspective maybe it's because I am seen as young and irresponsible, they are afraid that I will have wild orgies, smash plates and guitars on the tatami floors while screaming My Chemical romance and Nirvana songs at the top of my longs while chugging Strong Zero through my Statue of Liberty drinking hat in my panties on the 9th floor balcony while loudly arguing with my Japanese boyfriend.

3.) You need to have a list of things already put together BEFORE anyone besides Sakura House or some other Gaijin Circus companies will even consider taking you in. That is you will need to ALREADY have...

Five Things You May Not Have Thought of Like stupid me....
1.) Current Japanese Address
2.) Name seal/stamp (hanko)
3.) Japanese bank savings account
4.) Japanese Cell phone number
5.) Japanese (native preferably) Emergency contact

While some of this is kind of common sense as a foreigner (and specifically myself) this was not clear until after doing more research and contacting agents myself. I have these things, well most of them in America and I took them over to Japan. I still use my T-Mobile phone in Tokyo. I have my American credit and debit cards with me and yes of course I did plan to get these in Japan but I never thought about the fact that I had to have these things in order to rent an apartment but I admit that was somewhat stupid thinking on my end so I will give you a pass to judge me here, but hey I'm young! I will gladly use my Gaijin Card this time.
There are exceptions though. The 5 things listed above are not ALWAYS required but usually are.

The Big Picture

My issue isn't that I don't understand why Japanese people feel the way that they do. I can agree with probably just about every stereotype that they have for foreigners because sadly MOST people do those things (it's no different than America's views on minorities in my opinion, go ahead fight me) BUT the problem and thing that makes this so unfair to me is that most of the rude un-Japanese dishonorable, shameful, bad foreigners that have clouded the minds of these Japanese tenants and landlords who wouldn't want to live within a 100 mile radius of a foreigner yet alone invite one to nest in their sacred apartment building are just mother-fucking TOURISTS! I have now learned to hate that word because in Japanese eyes there is no difference between foreign resident and tourist and that is something that people never talk about anywhere on the internets. Yes long-term Japanese residents on multi-year working and student visa etc. can be rude, typical foreigners (there's an exception to every rule) but I believe that most people that have been in Japan and that are working with Japanese people and studying with them have learned enough of the culture to see that things work differently here and thus have taken off their American flag cape and traded it in for a Japanese uniform. Yes I am aware that most tourists are not American and from other countries thus still making them foreigners but you know what I mean!

The bigger problem that this posses for me and other foreigners alike is how do we and can we even "get out" (I promise I never saw that movie)? Your options are very limited if you want to get your own apartment here, especially if you are in my shoes. A foreign university student, who is not married to a Japanese man and that doesn't have a "real" salaried Japanese job.
Not to throw any shade or hate on those of my readers who have Japanese spouses, specifically if you are a woman, I imagine that having a Japanese husband is way more beneficial than a Japanese wife since.... well I'm not about to get into that but you know what I mean.... Basically being a Japanese man in Japan is like being a king. Men are expected to handle all of the gritty work here. I imagine that you would look a bit dumb and bitchy if you are a foreign man with a Japanese wife even if your Japanese is good when it comes to business it'll never be good enough.
On a side note when I was looking at an apartment (all the staff was bi-lingual with very good near perfect English) yet they were more interested in my "boyfriend" (not really) who was Japanese and they were still speaking to him in English but forgot that I AM THE ONE who's name will be on the lease not his (LOL)!

Anyway now that I've triggered and isolated the remainder of my readers, even with a Japanese native as your spouse, I am aware that landlords can and sometimes will still discriminate against you since they assume that you are probably crazy, rude and loud just like your gaijin spouse or the shallow but reasonable excuse that there will be a language barrier fear with the landlord.
Anyway back to throwing shade! I hate that it seems like everything in Japan is made for couples. Maybe that is why there are so many sham and shallow marriages here. I feel as though I am getting a  triple-shit punishment (yes that was inspired by Dashie) for being the big bad three...

#1 FOREIGN
#2 SUDENT
#3 NO JAPANESE HUSBAND

It's like Japan doesn't want you to live here at least not a decent life here unless you are married to a native Japanese. If you have spent any length of time wanting to go to Japan you probably heard about the main two options that people take to get here. They either use their already acquired bachelors degree or find a Japanese person to marry and thus be granted a visa that puts you a solid 100 platinum steps ahead of us peasantry foreigners who have not found our soul or sham-mates yet.

Now back to Sakura House I don't hate that company but they are ridiculously overpriced. I am paying almost $500 to live in a small Chi-town-hood dorm room with loud and noisy inconsiderate roommates (mostly from China and South Asian countries). Yes it is convenient and I don't have any other bills than my rent but for about less than $100 more I can have a whole 1 bedroom apartment in Mitaka. If you want an apartment from Sakura House you are looking at spending about $850- $3,500 and up for a small shit room that they call an "apartment" (its even smaller than a real Tokyo apartment) that is probably plastered in their embarrassing gaijin signs and have thousands of rules as though you are in a boarding school for pre-teen boys.

However, you feel trapped because if you are truly desperate to have your own space you should be willing to settle for anything so why be picky about the company? Well I will put it this way. As someone who was a slave for all 3 of these companies below, it's like being told that you can only have your prescriptions filled at CVS even although both Walgreen's and Walmart is closer to your home and besides everyone goes to Walmart and Walgreen's. WTF is CVS?! How inconvenient none of the cool sick people you know get their medicine from that Walgreen's rip-off. Well that's what housing is like here. Japanese people don't rent from Sakura House (so why do I have to, because I'm not Japanese right?!). For starts they only rent to foreigners as they constantly remind you and any Japanese person with a brain and any living family member that loves or even hates them wouldn't allow a member of their family dare be seen living in the slums of Sakura House (I kid... well kind of... I actually went to a Japanese share house (not owned by Sakura House) and well it was the nastiest home I've seen both here and in America). Friends don't let friends live in Sakura House. Temporary living is fine but you couldn't possibly live here comfortably for the rest of your life or even 2-5 years without wanting to walk (or possibly run and  jump) onto the JR tracks (sorry for being graphic and insensitive.... you fucking pussy).

Nobody wants to feel as though they are caged-in, trapped and forced to live in a particular place or as though they HAVE to rent through one specific agency and not just any agency but one that specializes in the outcasts of society, commonly known on the streets as "gaijin" or "foreigner". I hate feeling as though I do not have control over where I live.
I just wish that companies would be more upfront about what you need to get a place here and that real estate agents would stop playing bait and switch. They list apartments on websites MADE for foreigners to get advice find work and home etc. but then after you contact them they tell you this place doesn't rent to your sub-human gaijin species. It's very misleading, demeaning, and offensive and it really makes me angry.
I was aware of the racist landlord problem here in Japan and all of the cover up excuses because Japan is so homogenous and all that shittery BUT I never heard of discrimination against certain types of foreigners like me for being a student!
As I was told housing in Japan either accepts dogs or foreigners NEVER both. Yes smart ass I know you can have a pet in Japan as a foreigner, but you get the point. It is not common, and if you are foreign with a pet good luck to you!
To be honest I haven't experienced any difficulties because I am black. I'm always thrown in the same boat with white people here in Japan unlike America which is one good thing. At least here I am an equal alien but still it sucks!
I am sure that I am not alone in this but I wish it were talked about more because hey who knows, maybe something might change... Now if only we talked about them letting us take pictures and record video in stores and restaurants were we pay for the services.... Well that's another story for another ranty post.

I will also add that I am not one of those foreigners who complain about Japan needing to adopt the ways of the west. I don't think they should. I like Japan's uniqueness. I am glad that they are not like Europe or America.
I admire their culture. However I don't think that discrimination is a part of Japanese culture. For the most part 95% of discrimination here is out of fear of future difficulties and not a matter of feeling superior to you, but it still makes obtaining and doing certain things here seemingly impossible or very challenging.

Keep in mind that if you can't speak Japanese well, don't have a real visa (non-tourist) of any kind or if you are under 21 (yes that means you 18 & 19 year olds and sometimes even 20) good luck on finding a place to stay buddy!

Don't get me wrong!
Yes there's housing here for foreigners and even for foreign students. You can find an apartment, a dorm a share house etc. but if you happen to have more money to spend and say you want something somewhere between decent and livable or even luxurious you will become frustrated when you contact a nice apartment on the 9th floor of a fancy Shibuya apartment complex and discover that you've been rejected only because you are a foreign student and they don't care how much money you have so instead they show you slum buildings that are "cheap" but not even close to as nice as the place you had your heart and eyes set on. Not because they are being mean and believe that this is all that you deserve, but only these crap places are willing to rent to you with ease because no Japanese person wants to live there and that landlord needs some money-aye!.. Oh then they have the audacity to ask you to sign the same 2 year contract for the little slum-building as though it were the Polly Pocket Pent House you had your eyes on (I'm telling you it's bait and switch people)!

In fact in my honest opinion I don't even think they would bother helping us gaijin if it wasn't for the fact that we are more desperate, yen is yen and the agents get commissions (sometimes outrageously high) etc. for closing the deal with you. Plus they get to use and practice their broken English with you which might help them seem more valuable to their agency. Kind of like the dog trainer or tamer for foreigners.

I am glad that I made it to Japan and for that reason alone, I am willing to sacrifice not having a pimped-out pent house in Tokyo. So for now I will take what I can get and remain humble and satisfied that at least I am not being hosed down when I step out into the lobby. I have a tatami roof over my head, 7/11 Taco-Rice-Tuesday in my stomach, a fridge that beeps if it's not closed all the way and a toilet that can blast my ass and snatch with warm water simultaneously (free adult wipes?).

I don't have to live here until I die. I can always move. Maybe one day I will have a career and when I am ready a spouse so I can get my king-supreme-grandmaster-platinum-gaijin-card like the rest of you lucky bastards!

So please share with me your housing experiences and feel free to argue with me in the comments if I hurt your feelings (pussy)....

Dating & Sex In Japan As a Black Woman (My Honest And Personal Experience)

This is one of the most questioned topics that African-American women who have a love for Japan or Asian pop culture, want to have answers to. If you happen to be a woman of color, whether you are black brown, yellow or red, you are probably curious as to what dating will be like for you on a small island where everyone has the same perception of beautiful and it's generally the polar opposite of your natural appearance.
You will either love me for my honesty or hate me to death for making such a post. Sorry not sorry.

For my European-gaijin sisters I will have a general post about dating as a foreign woman soon. The link will be down below (you can also use the search bar on this blog too).
I recommend that black women read both posts since this one here is just about the differences in dating as a black woman.
The "general" (other) dating post will cover topics of communication sex dates etc. in more detail.

First thing's first. Before you can understand what it's like to date as a black woman you must first understand a few key points.

I will warn you now that this is not meant to be a feel good article, or to bash Japan or Japanese people or white women. I am simply stating the truth (alternative facts as some may call them). This is my perception from what I have both seen, heard, experienced and witnessed. You don't have to take my word for it! Go visit Japan yourself and talk to some people or simply look around and you will see! Anyone who can honestly disagree needs to take their head out of the sand or their ass. The truth hurts. This is my unfiltered TRUE opinion on what dating is like as a black woman through my eyes. I have been in Japan for about 7 months at this point, but I have been on tons of dates, made tons of friends and I am attending a predominantly Japanese university. I have lots of insight to offer. I am young and while I may struggle with my own self-image at times, I would consider myself to be attractive and I think most people would agree with that statement both in America & in Japan (not to brag or anything this is an alternative fact btw).

Please understand that looks do matter here (it's not just because you're black)! Personality is just as important but your appearance and personality combined can open or shut doors for you as there is already naturally a language barrier no matter how good your Japanese is.
I wanted to make this post very lengthy to cover EVERYTHING that I admittedly and desperately scoured the internet for before I came to Japan. This is unfiltered tough love information for black women who like Japanese men or who would like to test the waters in the dating pool of Japan. Some of these things may also apply to white women too, and that's okay I will have another post that will share some of the information in this post too for women in general.
So before we go any further I ask that you remove your PC shades, loosen up, learn how to laugh and breathe, accept the fact that there are differences between us on cultural, mental and physical levels that are hard to explain and sometimes to even comprehend.

Japanese Beauty Standards for Women

To me this is actually quite sad and Japan is not alone in this. I would say the whole world idolizes the appearance of looking white or of European descent. I feel awkward when I see women besides me wearing all black even black gloves with a black umbrella and black shades to avoid any sunlight from touching their skin.
As a black woman I grew up around people who were convinced that I was biracial or "stuck up" because I had "light skin" and "long" or "good hair"(not really but I was categorized as having it). The boys at my school and even in my neighborhood preferred light skin girls over dark skin, colored eyes over brown eyes, long hair over short etc.. You get where this is going right? Anything that made you look less like what you really are was considered as a good thing! The less black you looked the more white you were presumably.
It's a silly concept, but to be fair people like rarity. It's not impossible (I have friends and know black people with more yellow complexions, dark complexions and green eyes and even natural bright red hair) but unlike white people, minorities of every kind tend to have a more cookie cutter mold/appearance in MOST aspects. Black people can easily win the award for the most diverse complexions overall but we all generally have the same eyes, hair etc.. People always want what they can't or don't have. That's life.

Japan is no different. Women spend hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to look like white women often referred to as looking "hafu/half" (a.k.a as close as I can get to being white). Women wear makeup and tights that are lighter than their actual complexion. Bleach and whitening agents are included in almost every body or skincare product under the sun. Umbrellas are commonly used on a sunny day and chalked up as being to prevent sunburn and skin cancer (yeah right bullshit isn't that what sunscreen is for?).
The difference between Japanese & African-Americans is the acceptance of wanting to be white, western looking, pale whatever you want to call it. In America you'd have shade for days and a world of judgement and hate should someone discover that you've trying to whiten yourself up. In Japan it's totally normal, commonly accepted no one bats an eye at a woman who looks like a ghost.
When I say that women (and men too) here want to be white you probably just imagine a caucasian man or woman. No, no, no. They want to BE WHITE like the crayola crayon I mean as pale as you can possibly be. Not in a natural way.
Now once again I am not here to judge. To be honest I think that sadly every minority (myself included) has wished that they were white at some point in their life. I remember my mother telling me a story of her best friend praying at night to God with her Barbie doll that she would wake up as a white girl. It's a sad but true reality. So let's not point fingers and hate but understand where each other come from.
You will see the ugliest of both men and women American, Australian, Italian, French, German, British, and various other countries but here in Japan they are worshipped and treated like God's. This was hard for me to understand and so I quickly thought and accused my friend of liking people blindly and stupidly just because they were white * insert eye roll*, but I was wrong. There is much more to it. I personally like Japanese men. I don't like all Asian men. I would not date or marry someone just because they are Japanese. I would have to personally think that they were cute, funny, friendly etc.. Otherwise I would have been married at least 3-5 times by now (I had a guy ask me to marry him but he was creepy and I will talk about that in a video later).

I have standards. There are specific things that I look for in a man.
Well just as I know I have standards, to my Asian friends I clearly don't appear to. We view beauty differently. Having a large honker that sticks out 12 ft in front of your face and makes kissing like a TombRaider 4 puzzle is attractive. Large eyes, small mouth, slim face, small head, pale skin, blue eyes, basically anything that doesn't look Asian is exotic and attractive.
I can relate to some of these things, but others just leave me on WTF mode. It's a cultural difference.
Japanese men who I think are hot and could be models in America are average-okay and sometimes even deemed as ugly here. Why? Because they look like "a typical Japanese".  You will hear that phrase a lot if you befriend Asian girls while here in Japan. Just as I was quick to judge and view my friends as desperate they were all pointing back at me and thinking the same thing.

Where I come from in America there is no single standard for beauty. In Asia there is only 1 standard. If you look "western" (God I hate that term and in this case I mean white not just foreign) you are deemed as fuckable and lovable. It's really that simple. American girls have many different tastes. The only thing we mutually agree on is that we want our men to be tall, and to take the lead. There is no ideal face shape, complexion, weight etc.. We view beauty on an individual scale that's set to be judge differently based upon the person. In Japan such a scale does not exist and beauty is one size fits all (no pun intended). Either you have "the look" or you don't and therefore you need to get it!

So to wrap up this part basically the overall standard of beauty that is across the board here in Japan and every Japanese citizen will agree on is that having pale skin, being of European descent is the first and arguably most attractive thing about someone specifically a woman (I think my Japanese female friends will say that they like blue eyes and blonde hair even more than pale skin on men).

Personality Check

This is the most controversial part of this post but getting upset only proves my point more. I don't care about what you have seen, read or what you were told. Come to Japan and befriend Japanese men and women. take a look around. Open up your eyes and take off your PC shades once more. Japan and particularly Japanese women are not looking for a hero or for someone to rescue them (I will rant about this more in another video and blog post).
Men expect to work hard until they die and they wouldn't have it any other way. Women expect to cook, clean and shop for their families and they do it with honor. Both Japanese men and women give it their all.

Feminism is NOT, I repeat NOT welcome or well understood here. Most people associate feminism with women who think they don't need a man because they can have a good job and can make their own money just like the men do. That's not quite exactly what feminism is in America. That's a small corner of it to a degree, sure, but it's really about equality. I am personally not a feminist if you couldn't already tell (sorry not sorry). The way in which Japanese people think may seem outdated and old-fashioned, but to them it is not.

Honestly I prefer their way of thinking to the "American way".  I went on a date with a man and he asked me if I knew how to cook. I replied yes and asked him the same question. He literally laughed aloud and said "of course not! I am a man I don't cook!" My mother told me I should have said "I guess you don't eat then either huh?"
Now before you get all angry!!!

Yes! There is always an exception to every rule. You can find a man here that you can beat and whip into submission, and that will pack your lunches, scrub the bathroom floor by hand for his "queen". You may even find a more "American traditional man" who will split the chores and bills down the middle. Well good luck to you! Just know that if I were you I would be weary of any relationship that's supposed to be serious in which a Japanese man is willing to live in Japan and go against his cultural upbringing to make a snobbish foreign girl happy.

Look, despite our differences as feminists or non-feminist I think we should all be able to agree on this. If you are going to live in "his" country you should be willing to change your mindset and make some sacrifices for the sake of your relationship or marriage to keep things running smoothly. Being a stay at home mom or wife IS a job and a hard one. It is stressful and time consuming and the work life of a salary man is no walk in the park. I wouldn't dare ask my husband to help or even split the chores or any kind of work with me after spending like 12-16 hours at work. Sure you can argue that you work too (if you happen to have a career like your boyfriend or husband) but unlike him you don't HAVE to work you CHOOSE to. So to expect him do your job because you wanted to do his.... Okay I'm done making your blood boil. Go ahead, fight me and bite me. Someone will understand what I mean here!
If he's okay with this or encourages you to split everything or somethings then by all means go ahead but don't get angry or feel belittled if he seems confused as to why you can't or refuse to do it yourself.
Your anger only shows ignorance of Japanese culture on your end and it might make him question if he should have just dated or married a Japanese woman instead.
In general your man will be sweet and offer to help occasionally when he can, but to have brawls over housework, shopping etc. is silly at it's best. If he loves you and cares to study your culture he will try to be "fair" with you and accommodate your "western" culture.

Just as women are expected to perform 1950's womanly tasks, your behavior is expected to match it. If you have a loud, obnoxious, ghetto, overbearing personality unless you are looking for a Roppongi wannabe-thug, having an attitude and being loud or rude is seen as manly and thus unfavorable. Japanese men like girly-girls. Being ultra-feminine and translation "kawaii" is platinum here. Men love women who are intelligent, respectful, shy, caring, and loving. If you don't know what Japanese men want watch this guide right here....

This Will Show You How To Be The Perfect Girlfriend (please read and pay attention closely)

That should answer all of your questions. I swear whoever made that song had a Japanese husband or knew someone with one. So much truth in one song. Basically having a sweet charming personality is prized in Japan.

The Honest Truth

As a black woman in Japan things are very similar here in Japan as they are in America. If you were raised with any class in America and came from a predominantly white neighborhood you were probably taught that the spotlight is always on you and that you always have to "put on a show" because you have to represent your entire race. Japan is no different. In Tokyo there are "more" black people than in other parts of Japan, BUT there are hardly any. You rarely see black people and most of these so called black people are not "mutts" (a.k.a African-Americans mixed with roughly 25%ish European etc.) from various countries but rather pure Africans who came directly from Africa and thus carry themselves and behave differently often speaking English as a second language and harassing people in Kabukicho, Shibuya and Roppongi. Similarly to America, Japanese people can't tell the difference, so you will all be grouped together which sucks, because sadly that is the only interaction that they have ever had with a black person and it gives a bad name and image for those of us who are not loud, stalkers, hustlers, soliciting people to enter clubs and parties. Not to say that all of the Africans here are like that but well let's just be real for a second....

Most Japanese men have never considered dating a black woman for a few reasons.

1.) They don't know you exist!
You never hear about black women in Japan, like never ever. It's not because you're not attractive there simply isn't enough women living here or touring here for there to be a movement, fetish, or spark conversation amongst men etc.. Most people have never even seen a black woman in person. I can count the number of black women I've seen (including Africans on my 2 hands). There's mostly foreign men in Japan and when you do see a woman or a black women at that, it's rare, very shocking and suprising. 9 times out of 10 she is dating or married to a white man or on vacation for just a few weeks to a month.

2.) Stereotypes
There are both good and bad stereotypes about black people in general. Same crap you've heard in the U.S applies here. Also because the world loves America and follows American media closely. Who would want to date someone who acts like and looks like Madea?! The black women on popular American TV shows, in the movies and commercials often portray black women as unattractive unfeminine, masculine, loud ghetto women with 7 kids and 5 baby daddies. While this may cause Japanese men to laugh it's hard to believe or associate real black women as anything different from what they've seen and have been told. Remember as I said before, being shy cute and feminine is gold here. If you come off as demanding aggressive, ghetto, ignorant, Housewives of Tokyo (that would make a good show actually) you can say goodbye to about 99.9% of Japanese men here. Let's face it. I hope you don't fall into that dreaded stereotype (no pun intended), but a lot of people do which is why it is a stereotype and it sucks but life is not fair.

3.) They Simply Don't Like You (sorry you're not cute)!
This truth is a bit harsh. As a black woman it's always hard to tell if someone doesn't like you because you are black or if they just don't like "you" (but you so happen to be a black person). Let's face it! You're no Snow White. For a lot of people that alone can be a deal breaker. Dark skin is not sought after in Japan. However it could also be that YOU are just unattractive.
Everyone wants to believe that they are beautiful, but the thing is that not everyone is attractive. Don't believe me, then pick up your Bible! Because even God himself referred to Him (him being Jesus Christ) as an average looking man. You may think that you are "smokin' oakin" (sorry for using that line) but to him you may look more like Ugly Bob.... Everyone has their own taste and opinion.

Preferences do exist. When Japanese men think about dating foreign women the term foreign is almost synonymous with white woman. As I mentioned before there's hardly any black people here and as the stereotype goes "we" don't travel much and when we do it's the same few places within America.
Black people always go to Miami, New York, Chicago, Houston, Vegas or Los Angeles. Black women AS A WHOLE in my opinion are the least bit interested in Asia, Japan, anime, J-pop or even K-pop. YES there are black women who love Japanese or Asian pop culture (like you & I) but MOST are unaware of it or simply not interested. It's hard to like what you've never seen.

In fact let's flip this. I will speak for myself too. In America I grew up in both predominantly white and black neighborhoods in Chicago. I never imagined dating, liking, or marrying an Asian man. Not necessarily because I thought they were unattractive, but I hadn't seen many and most of the Asian men that I saw were
#1 Not Japanese
#2 Way older than me
#3 Unattractive
#4 Tourists
#5 I like most black people harbored stereotypes about Asians unconsciously

I simply wasn't exposed to enough Asian men to make a rational decision about them. I always considered myself to be open to any ethnicity as long as he's cute, funny, taller than me and friendly. I'm all game.
However because I didn't see Asian men, I never thought about being with one. The only time Asian men crossed my mind was when I saw a nerd or martial arts guy in some racist movie or TV show. Similarly to how most Asian men have only seen black women in some ghetto hood-film about drugs and gangsters.
Just because you think you are cute or maybe you are cute in your home country DOES NOT mean that you are a super star here in Japan.

You don't have to change yourself by any means but you'd do have to accept that if you don't have a "Japanesey" or charming personality and good looks dating here will be VERY difficult for you. You need to look and be approachable and cute. Otherwise you will feel invisible in the dating scene here in Tokyo. Yes, of course you can find an odd man who loves biker chicks, rocker girls, and thugs, but most men here will find that type of style and look off putting and will not see you as wifey material.

What Is Dating Like?
To be honest the topic will rarely be about your race/ethnicity but more so about your American (or whatever respective country you came from) culture. Japanese men are smart. They are great listeners and authentically care about what you are saying to them. When I go on dates men ask me where I am from and I reply that I am from America and thus American they do not play charades or twenty questions with me. I am simply seen and referred to as a "hot American girl", which I am. Yes Iam bragging.
I have had a few dates do the dreaded (no pun intended) no no's such as touching my hair, running their hands through my hair feeling my skin, and asking if I had a perm when my hair was curly (go figure!).
Honestly I have never been bothered by this and never will be. I totally understand the curiosity about my hair and skin. My skin is dark and so is my very curly hair. If you had never seen a black person or touched a black person's skin and hair you'd naturally want to. Besides naturally curly hair is practically non-existent in Asia. I have touched my Asian and white friends hair and felt their skin so why can't they? Not to make excuses for Japanese people, but you have to remember that Japan is not America. It is almost entirely Japanese or otherwise Asian. They do not deal with or believe in racism here (but they believe it exists in America ironically) and do not understand that those things can be seen as prejudice, dehumanizing, and cause for an uncomfortable situation.
Japanese people constantly use the term "foreigner(s). That is the only term I hate more than "western". You will constantly be referred to as a foreigner and grouped together with every non-Japanese person.
That's understandable because duuuh, I'm not Japanese, but it's a bit annoying when Japanese people assume that you will like or behave a certain way because "that's what many foreigner like or do" *insert eye roll here*. The funny thing is that this statement is racist but they don't see it.
Yet I have to listen to rants from both my Asian friends and dates about Americans thinking that they are all Chinese and saying "nihao" (however you spell that). In all fairness most of the Asians both in the world and in America are Chinese! It's a good guess and some Japanese people look more Chinese, but I know it's a pride thing.
Hey I'm of African descent and no Asian has ever asked if I spoke French or any other language people instantly and always speak to me in English! Nobody has ever asked what country I am from. I mean Africa is a continent! And now we are getting off subject so anyway!......
Japanese men ask me the same questions that they ask my white friends. "Is there anything you can't eat? Why did you come to Japan? What is your major? Do you like Japanese guys because I heard western girls don't like Japanese men? Can you eat raw food like horse, sushi etc.?" They also tell me the same stuff. Men will try to impress you by asking if you like their car, telling you that they are so American that they can eat the greasiest food on the menu and expressing their love for the All American Hamburger, yogurt, milk, and bread you know the food that all Americans love to eat.
No one here has mistook me for a celebrity, asked me if I was Beyonce, Nicki Minaj or Tyra Banks (but I have been compared to Rihanna and Beyonce, I wish). Nobody has clutched their wallet, or ran away from me, I have not been called a nigger or monkey or ape etc. (yet at least not by a Japanese person in real life).
I am not taking away from or doubting stories of those who have sadly experienced such harsh words or experiences I am simply saying that you shouldn't fear those things because that is not EVERYONE'S experience so why have fear?! Besides I've been called everything above and under the sun in America and you probably have too. My skin is so thin but I have been conditioned to endure any racist comments that I may receive in the future.

Most Japanese men here are aware of the racism that we endure in America and will even ask if it's okay to say "black" when referencing a person of African descent (which I think is very cute). You are not seen as a black woman but instead as a foreign woman or as I call it a fucking human being! Your color comes second to that and is rarely if ever even mentioned.
However you will have to try harder and put in more effort in general especially if you want more than a one night stand....

The Advantage Point

To be honest you have a big advantage here as a black woman. You have a glass half empty half full kind of situation.
As a minority in America I am used to being stared at. I had a lady (from my own neighborhood) threaten to call the cops because a suspicious black woman (that woman being me) was dropping off a Christmas gift for my mother's friend and I hung it on the door wrong door and took it back placing it on the door next to it (it was a townhouse). She had never seen me before so assumed I was breaking in during broad daylight on a Sunday morning. Anyway let me get out of my feelings....
I don't find it uncomfortable here. Instead of looks of disgust, I generally get looks of curiosity, winks, smiles, waves, hello's, konnichiwa's  and compliments from kawaii to "you are charming". However most of your counterparts (aka your white friends) are not used to being the center of attention, stared at as though you are in some sort of circus exhibit. It may sound cool to turn heads everywhere, but even for me it took some getting used to since this happens even more so than in America by far but at least we've had some training already.
I can feel the difference in stares. It's hard to explain. I went out to eat with my white guy friend in my suburban neighborhood (90% white) the waitress was very rude to us but sweet to everyone else the whole restaurant was staring at us. We weren't dating but they didn't know that. We got lots of nasty looks and this was in 2015!

Here in Tokyo people always stare at me! I stand out more than everyone around me, including 99.9% of foreigners because I am dark and can appear to be biracial or possibly Asian (I've been asked countless times if I was half Japanese). I am a foreign black woman with curly hair (sometimes)! I am practically begging for attention by leaving out my house. However when Asian people stare here, it's a warm stare full of amazement. "WOW! She's a black woman! Oh I wonder why is she here (snaps secret picture)?" You have to be relaxed, confident and comfortable with yourself.
Not every time someone stares at you in America it's because they are prejudice either! Maybe they are shocked to see an interracial couple or friendship. Maybe your hair is looking awesome or not so awesome, who knows! You can generally get a sense though, but still there's always an exception to every rule.
I am more comfortable than most of my foreign sisters when out in public as I can easily tune out and switch focus from stares to enjoying the moments and even have the courage to smile or wink back at the cutie eyeing me on the train.

Time Is Money

In general dating here is the same as in America, just more serious and more planning is involved. Men here usually have a plan from the time and day that you meet to the restaurant you will eat at and the activities that you will do. They are great at taking the lead (most of the time) and coming up with date spots and ideas. DO NOT SHOW UP LATE! If you must text and call and apologize profusely (he knows you'll be late because you're a girl but still be polite).
The biggest pro here for me is that men here GENERALLY only date to marry. Which is great for someone who is serious like me and a hopeless romantic. If he doesn't plan to be serious with you you will only meet to fuck and it will generally be late at night for only 1-3 hours.
Japanese men may seem very reserved and hide their feelings but they don't waste their precious time. They spend their whole lives studying and in school and then they spend all day working hard. Their reward is having a beautiful loving woman to come home to. They don't want to invest their time or money into a woman that they wouldn't consider marrying.

Protect Your Heart

This is where you must be very careful and guard your heart (I will make a post about this for foreign women in general later). Not every man that hits on you or asks you out for a drink or coffee is sincere or interested in something serious with you. This hurts but once again it's the truth. Black women and Blonde women have 1 thing in common in Japan. They are rare! Unfortunately many men have fantasies, and bucket lists and have even been dared or promised their friends that they will "hit it" or "score" with one. If you are okay with being used (hey I won't judge you maybe its mutual and goes both ways) then by all means go for it! But if you don't want to end up getting hurt, attached or in your feelings then runaway! Some men are obvious with their obsession or fetish, like the men who proposed to me or talked about getting married or having sex moments after meeting. Those are the oinkers you should stay away from.
The pro to this is that thankfully most Japanese men are very honest. They will tell you how they honestly feel or don't feel if you ask. So ask up front and avoid wasting your own valuable precious time in the long run.
I am always a bit skeptical of a Japanese man who appears to be outgoing because he probably does this as a regular thing. You know hanging around the train station and picking up foreign girls, giving suggestions and directions asking for your LINE etc.. A guy like that will almost certainly be looking for some puhhd by the end of the night and has more than likely successfully found women before you and will continue doing this after you!

Sex Talk About It

This is the weirdest one for me and I don't think this is just a black thing but I will share it here anyway. The men that I have been with both casually and sexually have almost all apologized in advance for being small, not muscular and or hairy.... I personally don't like body hair or muscular men and I'd be a liar if I said size doesn't matter but it is definitely not a deal breaker necessarily for me either. However no woman in her right mind will say that she prefers a man with a small penis unless she just fears that him having a Hisoka in his pants will encourage promiscuous behavior.
Trust me I thought I didn't care about size until I experienced both extremes. That's the sluttiest thing I've said...  but it's true.
That lack of confidence is both sad and funny and honestly it is off putting. A total turn off. I don't care if you have a string bean in those sexy dress pants! You should be selling it to me like that pen in "The Wolf of Wall Street". I do appreciate the honesty so I won't complain too much.

To answer your question since you are obviously curious. Yes Japanese men (possibly Asian men in general) are OVERALL on average, small to smaller than their western counterparts.
I can never tell if he is saying this apologetic "my chinko is small speech" because I am a black woman, and as the stereotype goes, all black men have 20 inch dicks.
Penis size is a very sensitive topic for men around the world so this is not something to bring up joke about or talk about unless you are trying to scar him emotionally. In which case you are a bitch! Not all Japanese men are small but most are and even the men who are not small they are only "big for a Japanese guy" (sorry to say and yes I know this is a stereotype I'm such a bad person but this also goes for Japanese women and breast size, just saying). This is a general statement there's exceptions to every rule. Not all black men are big down there. Not all black women are curvy or fat. You get my drift.
Japanese men love panties so cute panties *cough cough* Adore Me, Victoria's Secret, and JCPenney's will be your best friends when it comes to sexy lingerie (ahhh men are so simple it's cute and funny).
Your man will want to bathe and shower with you before and sometimes even after (or during lol) having sex. This way you both know that you are fresh and clean after a long day of work and besides it's fun to bathe together with your man! If he asks you if you want to take a shower that means translation I'd like to fuck you after we are both pristine clean. You turning down this bubbleless-bath-tub invite is a sign to your man that you are either...
  #1 Not trying to fuck
#2 A dirty foreign woman who probably has crabs and flying cockroaches in her snatch.

Men like keeping kleenex near the bad to clean up the white stuff (I don't have much experience with men or American men for that matter but Ive been told that kleenex is a common "fap station" necessity and not unique to Japanese men). Japanese men like to kiss and cuddle before and after sex. Japanese men are also VERY clean. They generally smell great! Both their body and hair smells and looks model like. They clean their underwear and clothing and homes. I can count the dirty guys I've seen (never will I date or sleep with one) but they are few and far in-between which is great for you if you don't like dirty raggedy men.
Japanese men are great at foreplay (what that mouth do *cough cough* and them hands)! I will leave a bit to the imagination, but lets just say that he will find spots you didn't even know existed, you will discover new ways and things that turn you on. Japanese men are VERY technique oriented and selfless in bed. The best make-out session, sex, orgasm, Fuck it! My best everything has been with a Japanese man. That is all. If you want something more, less, or different tell him and you will be glad you did. Because he will listen readjust and correct.
During sex you are the main attraction and his job is to please you. Be kind and return the favor! His appreciation of your passion and willingness to please him, the warmth and touch of his soft skin, and the captivating smell of his hair wax will have you coming back for more.

I have no idea as to how little old me would know all of this.....

What Japanese Men Like About Me Personally

After they are done telling me how cute, sexy, or kawaii I am, (sorry there's no way to write this post without sounding like a cocky stuck up douche) compliments become more detailed and sometimes uncomfortably creepy. Of course as I constantly say throughout all of my posts beauty is very subjective. I may be sexy af to one man and the ugliest woman alive to another. Everyone has their own taste. Honestly I think that most men that I've dated don't "like" black women but felt as though I were the exception to the rule. People constantly tell me that I should be a model and stay that I look like Rihanna (I wish).
I've had men tell me they love black women and wish that they were black themselves because "black people are so cool". One date I had knew more about Africa and rap music than I did haha.
Look at me and my sexiness!

Lips
Despite the fact that having a small mouth is said to be praised and preferred. I am constantly complimented by men (and occasionally even women) on my sexy full lips. I've been told I'm a great kiser and I already know it! I think my slip n slide tongue and cutie lips are to thank for that.
Now of course just because you have big lips DOES NOT mean that they are cute. It's all about the shape, color and even size (I think there's such thing as too big). Proportion is key! Of course you can't help the way God made you so if he does't like your mouth puncher then fuck him!

Great Big Breastestest
Yes, your boobies are treasured! All men universally like boobs and in particular large boobs. I have done no research on this but I'd say the average person in Japan where's no more than a B cup possibly even an A. Breasts are also not put on display. You can show off your legs if you'd like but your neck line shoulders and your forbidden titters should never be exposed. Thus making them a sight to see. If you are sporting D's (or even C's I'd think) your potential or current loveman will appreciate your rattles. He has also probably never seen or touched if you know what I mean REAL big boobies besides on porn stars on the nets or celebrities in Hollywood movies.

The Curse Of Curves
Most of the men who like me compliment my curves saying that they like my shape or "I like chubby girls" I would rather be called thick like in America but it beats saying I like fat girls. Besides having been overweight my entire life I have come to terms with my mass of... hey watch your mouth!

Those Curls
My hair is really curly. The kind of curly hair you'd get when you get a perm with straight hair. This is not everyone's cup of tea per se but I've met some men who caught me on one of the days in which I was too lazy to straighten my curls and absolutely loved them and was fascinated by their texture.
I've had a few honest dates say that they prefer my hair straight. I had one date get a bit upset that my hair wasn't in it's natural state. He didn't understand why I'd straighten it just to curl it in an unnatural way.

Exotic Overload
As I said before there aren't many black people yet alone black women so you may cause some men to take a double look and of course everyone has preferences just ass you may find Japanese men cute some Japanese men find black girls to be cute as well. I am constantly told that I look exotic between my face complexion and hair it's hard to decide what I am for a lot of people other than the obvious side of my skin being black.

My Voice
I am always being told that I have a sexy or kawaii voice especially when I speak Japanese. One date told me that I am wasting my talent and should be a voice actor (I wish!). I kinda like my voice too haha.

Know Yourself

Don't forget who you are when you come here! Don't lose yourself in all of the crazy subcultures, nightlife and partying here. Having a boyfriend or husband should compliment you, not make you. Don't pick up habits or lifestyles to try and fit in and be pleasing to friends or men. Because that's no fun! You will only end up with a life full of bad decisions, regrets, and will find that those people never loved or cared about you anyway. If he loves you he won't mind that you aren't a party animal or chain smoker (so baby pull me closer in the backseat of.... God I hate that song *pukes*). One night stands, friends with benefits, sex friends, sex on the first date whatever you call it is not I repeat NOT NORMAL IN JAPAN! I don't care what you were told even if it was by a Japanese person. It's a lie! A Japanese man would never ask or expect to have sex with a date or woman he just met. I say you should wait at least 1-2 months and make sure this guy is worth it, and clean.
Don't sell yourself short or cave into that guy who looks just like Cloud from Final Fantasy because he will get up and leave you with a broken heart as soon as he gets what he wants.
Japanese men have been taught that foreign men and women are sex machines and party animals. They think that you are easy to score, play and have fun with. Don't make that stereotype true! Have some class and cover your ass! You don't have to have sex to keep a man. If he really likes you or loves you he won't mind waiting until you get to know each other and feel as though the moment is right. Otherwise you will quickly rack up 1,000 partners in a month. Trust me! I've had some tough choices to make in regards to saying "no" to what I call host guys (because they are so hot you wouldn't believe that they aren't a host guy). I went on a nice date with a guy and he ended up taking me to a hotel in which I had to put my foot down and angrily walk out and find my way home (I was brand new to Japan at the time and didn't even have a phone, anyone who has lived here knows that Google Maps is a lifesaver). It hurt because the whore in me thought he was so cute and perfect and I wanted to, but thankfully I made the right choice and I am now in love with a man who is a million times better than that pig! Don't lose sight of who you are! Don't get rid of your morals because I promise you overtime you think you've seen the cutest Japanese guy and then an even hotter one finds his way into your life. There will be another man! Who knows?! Maybe he won't be Japanese!

The Wrap Up

Most Japanese men prefer to date Japanese women. The ones who do like foreign women would only consider dating a white woman. You have to be feminine and cute if you want a cute Japanese boyfriend no matter what race you are. It is harder to date as a black woman and there are more rules and guidelines for you to follow since simply being foreign is unfortunately not ALWAYS enough for you. White women, just like white men here, can be the ugliest most unattractive being you've ever seen, but because they have blonde or brown hair green or blue eyes and pale skin, they are seen as Carrie Underwood, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake,Keith, Urban, or Chris Hemsworth (fuck he's hot) or whatever sexy Caucasian celebrity you can think of. Fat or thin, ugly or cute it doesn't matter she's white, so she's exotic and beautiful. The same does not apply for you ALL the time but most of the time I'd say it still does because well, you're still exotic and cool because you're foreign.
I felt like I was the shit and was getting all of the konnichiwa's and kawaii's that Japan had to offer until I hung out with my friends (there's like almost no black people in Japan especially women) and saw that number quadruple.
Yes it makes you jealous. Yes it is heartbreaking, but once again it's life and life is not meant to be fair.
Once again don't take my word for it! Come to Tokyo and go out alone and then with your friends go to a few bars and clubs, go out at a few restaurants sit in the lounge at school watch as the magic unfolds.
Yes, as a black woman you can get a Japanese boyfriend! You can get a Japanese boyfriend who is hot and even out of your league. You can find plenty of men here who are serious about you. Relationships are possible and so are marriages between black women and Japanese men. They aren't common because there isn't a lot of interest on either side, nor are there a lot of black women in Japan so we are not even an option for most men here.
I personally like Japanese men and I prefer dating here than dating in America. I like that the purpose is much more clear, men here are more serious and mature and very family oriented.

Sorry I Ate Your Pie

I am aware that I am going to get a lot of hate for this, but I don't care.  I wanted to hear the truth and I learned it the hard way since everyone was so scared to give an HONEST review or opinion on the dating scene here in Tokyo. So now I want to share my honest perspective with you! I know that some smart ass of color (or someone who knows someone) can't wait to tell us all about their happy marriage to the ugliest man in Japan (I kid I kid) and that's great but that's not the point I'm making!

I am sharing the reality of dating here. Anyone can find someone anywhere, but it won't be easy. Depending on what you're working with you might have to take that up with Jesus! Sure you can get a boyfriend or even a husband but is he unattractive, short and stocky (is he even your type)? If that's your type more power to you!
Fuck my opinion! What matters is if you can find a man that YOU like and that YOU think is attractive. My Japanese and Chinese friends gag at the sight of most of the men that I drool over and vice versa because I view beauty differently because I am American (in America beauty is very subjective there's no one size fits all in Asia there's more of a cookie cutter look you must achieve to be beautiful).
If you like him and he's yours than nothing and no one else really matters.  This post is not to make you feel ashamed or unwanted. I just wanted to warn you that everything is not cupcakes and rainbows when it comes to dating here as a black woman as every post and video I've seen makes it out to be that way. I also don't want my white-sisters to feel ashamed, guilty, or angry for being who they are! Hey you win! You're lucky! You can't help the fact that you were born the way you are! This is just to shed some light on a touchy and controversial subject for black women in particular since there are few black people (especially women) in Japan and even fewer who make videos or blogs here.

I will eventually upload a YouTube video on AMBW dating in Japan.

This post is full of generalizations and stereotypes. Yes we all know there's an exception to every rule Captain Obvious. Every man is different but every culture is also different to so this article is simple meant to share my perceptions and experiences on dating Asian men in Japan.

Feel free to bitch, complain, disagree, argue or riot in the comments below! Because as always people love to get offended welcome to the internet!
I'd love to hear your stories and experiences with Japanese guys whether you are a black or white woman doesn't matter Please share your experience or feel free to ask any questions about dating that I didn't answer.
