10 Things I Wish Black People in Japan Would Stop Doing

Being black in Japan can be fun, scary, and exciting. Being a minority in a foreign country where you aren't the ideal image of beauty, don't have a lot of friends, and can hardly speak any of the local language can be tiresome and stressful. It can be a huge relief to have other like minded black people to talk and relate to in Japan. Being surrounded by other blacks can help keep you sane and make you feel loved and protected. You can easily make new friends and vent to people within the black community. You can get helpful advice, good recommendations, and information about various places and services that you'd have never found elsewhere. However there are some issues that arise when you bring together people of varying cultures, backgrounds, nationalities, dialects, and even religious beliefs. While some of these things in my list can of course be said for white, Hispanic, and other non-Japanese Asians in Japan, I am speaking on the issues that I have personally experienced as a black American woman living in Japan. It goes without saying that not everyone in Japan who is black falls into these categories (regardless of their country of origin).
Don't get me wrong! I am extremely grateful for the existence of black groups in Japan. I believe that there is a lot more good than bad that these communities do for us within the group from helping us find good places to eat or work at, to hooking us up with a random Japanese woman who can braid hair better than the professionals at your favorite African hair salon (doesn't every city in America have at least one really good black hairstylist that is from Africa?), but let's face it, sometimes the environment can be rather toxic. There are issues with differing opinions on what it means to be black and on the stance of everything from marriage to hair.
Please keep in mind that for this post I am simply talking about the bad things that I would like to see us change as a community moving forward. Not everything in this post is about every group of black friends or each individual black person in Japan, so if it don't apply let it fly!

You can watch my YouTube video on this topic here...

10 Things I Wish Black People in Japan Would Stop Doing

1. Stop Judging People's Pro-Blackness Based on Who They Date or Marry

Despite the lack of black people living in Japan a lot of black people have mixed feeling about interracial dating and marriage.

Dating or marrying outside of your race doesn't mean that you hate black people. Having a spouse that is not your race doesn't mean that you hate blacks. Marrying or dating outside of your race doesn't mean that you talk negatively about your race to your partner. Please stop assuming that because my boyfriend is Japanese that I must hate black men.

I have also noticed that this topic has a double standard in a very strange way. Black women seem to have mixed reactions about seeing other black women with a non-black man. They will either praise you and act shocked if they see you are in a serious relationship with a Japanese man or they will give you the stank eye and view you as someone who is hurting the back community by not having "black love".

When black men are seen with Japanese girls it makes most black women angry. They talk about how black men come to Japan and forget about them or accuse them of not wanting black love etc..

Black men almost always say negative things about black women who are with a Japanese man. They assume that they "want to be Japanese" hate themselves or see them as a bed wench or a sellout.

I find it quite ridiculous that people assume that you only love your partner because you want to have mixed race kids with light skin and 3 type hair. You have no idea what I talk about with my partner. I have never insulted or stereotyped black men just because my man is Japanese. I am always trying to educate the people I date and befriend about black history and culture. Yes I have dated black men and having sex with a black man or woman doesn't make you pro-black just like having sex or dating a Japanese person doesn't make you anti-black. You have no idea why that couple got together or for how long they have been dating or married to each other and it's none of your business! I can assure you that supporting and liking black people goes beyond making love with them in bed.

2. Stop Calling Other Black people "Tokens" for Not Wanting to be Your Friend

Not everyone that doesn't like you hate black people and that goes for other blacks too! We all have different personalities and come from different cultures and cities. The assumption that I just want to be a token is ridiculous. Black is a race not a personality. We may be the same race but are you a match for me? So because we are the same race I am supposed to ignore the fact that you have body odor your"re obnoxious and rude and we have nothing in common besides our African roots?

I also find that black men are often only trying to be my friend because they either want a wing woman OR the more likely case they want to date or have casual sex with me. I also find that black women are really just looking for connections whether it be searching for someone to braid their hair or finding a job that hires other blacks (they believe that their race is making it hard for them to find a job) jobs or even men. While I don't mind sharing information and helping the black people (I have an entire YouTube channel based on helping total strangers) but who wants to be friends with someone who is only using you for information? Who wants to date someone with an annoying or obnoxious personality? Who wants to have friends that are creepy and flirtatious?

Some people simply don't like to have friends and others don't care for mixing their personal life with their work life. Just because both of you are black and work together or live in the same building doesn't mean that you have to love each other as best friends or get married. You don't have to be rude or nasty to people just because you don't like them and I am not supporting those that do so. Let people befriend who they want to. As long as they aren't bullying or being rude to you people have the right to choose who they want to associate with.

3. Stop Fetishizing & Stereotyping Japanese People

I have both read comments and captions on Instagram and YouTube as well as had ridiculous conversations with black people on the topic of dating Asians . Japanese people aren't perfect. Black people aren't perfect. You can date outside of your race without putting them on a pedestal and bashing your own race. Just as a black guy can rape you or cheat on you so can a Japanese man. Just as a Japanese woman can be "tight" or docile so can a black woman.

I often hear black women say that Japanese men are too feminine for their liking but these same girls get angry when they hear people say that black women are too strong and masculine. Please stop saying that all Japanese men are feminine or too small etc..  Every man and woman is different.  It is hypocritical to expect people to not stereotype you when you also have stereotyped them. I am not referring to generalizations like cultural differences like manners and personalities among Japanese people but rather using negative stereotypes to exclude an entire race of people from being a potential friend or date. I would be a liar if I acted like most Japanese men aren't shorter than the average western man and like they don't have smaller eyes than most western people, but having small eyes doesn't make someone ugly and some of the most handsome men in the world are short. you don't have to force yourself to date a Japanese person to prove that you aren't racist but be open to dating people whom you find to be attractive both physically and mentally. You can love your partner without fetishizing their race and believing that they are superior and incapable of doing any wrong simply because they are a certain race. Focus your love on the individual and not on their race.

4. Stop Complaining About & Bashing Everything in Japan

You don't have to lie to yourself or others about your likes and dislikes, your wants, feelings of being homesick, or your bad experiences in Japan but if all you ever do is talk about how bad anime is and how awful Japanese TV is and how you can't stand J-Pop then please hush. I don't understand why people choose to come to Japan just to hate on everything that exists here. I am not talking about just venting or talking about being treated poorly simply for being black but rather just focusing on everything negative in Japan that could be improved from the culture to stores. I didn't like Japanese tea or rice crackers when I first came here. I still can't eat natto. If you don't like Japanese culture food or people why are you here? I assume that it must be for money but if you are from a first world country the pay in Japan is trash so why not just go back home? You don't have to like every aspect of Japan in order to stay here but if you really just hate everything about this country then just go somewhere that makes you happy. No one wants to hear you rant about how silly kimonos and geisha are  or about how disgusting karaage is. You are entitled to your own opinions and beliefs but nobody likes a hater. Stop being closed minded and try something new. I didn't care for foreign music or TV shows until I randomly got bored and after years of rejecting it I took my friends recommendation and looked into K-Pop and here I am 10+ years later living in Japan and a loyal K-Pop stan. I can't stand listening to people endlessly complain about the lack of soul food restaurants and black hair supply or makeup stores. yes we miss these things and we need some of them but surely there are also good things about Japan that are a lot better than what we have back at home.

5. Stop Trying to Start Black Only Cults

While there aren't a ton of these cults the ideas that these cults preach are followed and believed by many. There are some black people that will come to Japan, marry a Japanese woman and have children then turn around and tell you who you should or shouldn't marry and have kids with and accuse you of being sinful for having a mixed race child or marriage. These cults are full of irony and contradictions that simply don't add up. While I am 100% in support of black love I don't believe in allowing myself to be owned by any race of man. I am grateful that I live in a world where I have the freedom to date and marry who I want to. If you hate interracial relationships or friendships then leave Japan. Why would you move to a predominantly Asian country when you are against interracial marriages and think that mixed raced babies are the result of sinful behavior?  Why does black love have to mean anti-mixed love? Shouldn't we be happy that one of our community members found a good partner? How do you know that they are raising their children or teaching their non-black partner to be anti-black? These cults are offensive and insulting and the leaders are the biggest hypocrites as they have no business coming here and couldn't even take their own advice which is why they have mixed race children themselves. They have convinced so many other blacks to settle for any other black person that comes their way or to remain single for life unless they are "fortunate" enough to find their partner who has to be 100% black in a country where over 95% of the population is Asian.

6. Stop Telling Black People What Race They Are

You don't decide who is black or not. You are not God nor are you the DNA police. If you are mixed race you are still part black. It is also likely that you are treated like a 100% black person based on your looks and cultural upbringing. My children will be both black and Japanese whether you like it or not. They will more than likely feel as though they can relate to being black more so than Japanese because of where we live and spending the majority of their time with me as their black mother.

Stop accusing people with light-skin, light colored eyes, or loose curls of black-fishing or getting upset when someone who looks racially ambiguous speaks on black issues or wants to be a part of a discussion or groups for black people. Being black in Japan can be a struggle within itself. The last thing people want is to be bullied and outcast out of the group of people in which they can relate to and identify with the most. Light-skin and mixed race people are also capable of being empathetic and sympathetic towards those with darker skin who have more complicated struggles as a black person but they also have their own issues too. This isn't the Oppression Olympics! We aren't trying to "invade" your space but we are also black people and have the right to speak our mind and vent too. Having a mixed race child doesn't "taint" our lineage or destroy the existence of black love. Most of us are already 20-25% European on average to begin with!

7. Stop Doing Ghetto, Illegal, and Weird Things Then Labeling it as a Racist Experience

Racism is REAL! There are people here that have double standards and that won't bat an eye if a white or Asian person where to do something, but if you where to do the exact same thing they'd be quick to judge and take action. However I often watch videos, read posts or talk to black people who bring their ridiculous habits from home abroad and expect to get a pass because they are a foreigner (gaijin card).  I hate it when black people do illegal things  ESPECIALLY if it is something that is stereotypical.

A lot of the Japanese people here have never had a real life interaction with a black person before. Their experiences with black people are limited to what they have seen on TV and the African guys that try to force people into sketchy parties, clubs, and brothels in the red light districts (in other words they are only working with negative stereotypes up until they day that you approach them). When you do crazy things that go against the cultural norm and that are disrespectful to the people around you then of course you will be met with evil glares, hateful words, and even harmful actions. I don't support bullying and I hope no one ever says or does anything harmful to you but you do have to understand that you are no longer in your home country. There are different rules and expectations that you are expected to abide by and follow.

You cannot do things like improperly disposing of garbage (throwing away futons or dumping your trash in a neighboring garbage can), taking shopping carts or baskets out of the store and into the parking lot to make it easier for you to carry your bags (not a normal thing to do in Japan), being loud and obnoxious in public spaces where silence is expected (sometimes talking on the train is okay or being loud in a restaurant but you have to read the room), wearing immodest clothing and complaining about being treated unfairly because your boss asked you to wear a shirt that doesn't show cleavage or necklines etc.. If you take off your wig before boarding the train or start applying gel and lotion to your hair on board you can't get mad if people take your photo or record you or if they point and laugh or shimmy away from you. You might think that what you are doing is normal and understandable or that the people around you are overreacting but your behavior is uncalled for, strange, disrespectful and comical to those that are around you. If you appear to be stealing then you will be watched and followed and treated like a thief and yes that included if you break the rules (written or unwritten) by taking store items like baskets and shopping carts outside of their intended place of use. If you dump your mattress in your neighbors dumpster instead of paying for it to be picked up you cannot get angry and say that Japanese people are racist because you got a ticket for using a dumpster that didn't belong to you and doing so in an illegal way.A lot of the rules that you are breaking are common sense to people who have done their research on Japanese culture and that have learned how to speak Japanese language. There are always things that you can learn about Japan no matter how old you are or how long you have been here. Making friends with the locals and getting advice from people that haven't only lived here for a long time but that have made an effort to assimilate and respect the country and the rules within it. We don't have to agree with or like the rules in order to respect and follow them. If it isn't going to harm you or someone else then I don't see why it's too much to ask for you to separate your trash or to avoid using strong perfumes and lotions, or to dress modestly at work. When you break the law or refuse to follow the etiquette here it discredits those of us who have truly had racist experiences.

8. Stop Staying Inside The (Black) Gaijin Bubble

Having black friends can be a lot of fun. Being with other people that look and think like you and that can relate to you from the start can help you handle your loneliness and anxiety of being the odd one out in Japan, but it can also have negative effects too. There are so many people here who only hang out with other foreigners or only other black people. Please stop missing out on opportunities to learn Japanese or make friend with the locals. Stop calling people fake for liking Japanese food or for having Japanese friends and not just staying in your little "Blacks Only" clique. Why come to Japan if you just want to be around the blacks 24/7? If you are unwilling to befriend people that don't look like you then why did you come to Japan? If I wanted to be around more blacks I'd have stayed in Chicago or New York. Choosing to associate and befriend non-black people doesn't make someone a sellout or anti-black.

I have never met a black person that stays in one of these bubbles that isn't miserable and that will end up staying here forever. They often lack cultural knowledge and Japanese language skills. These people usually are the ones to become depressed and feel isolated after having been here for 6 months-3 years and decide that Japan isn't for them because they feel as though they can't make friends or date people here. While there is more to life in Japan than having hundreds of friends or dating thousands of Japanese people becoming close to the locals here will make your stay in Japan much more enjoyable and it will help you to assimilate more smoothly.

You don't have to fake a new personality or drop all of your foreign friends but you do need to create more balance in your life between groups of friends. You can learn a lot by hanging out with different groups of people. You don't always have to be with other black women or men in order to have fun here. There is nothing wrong with having black friends or wanting to be with people who make you comfortable but don't limit yourself to this. There are fun exciting and good Japanese people here just as there are fun and exciting foreigners.

9.  Stop Being a Natural Hair Nazi

Stop calling people anti-black for relaxing or straightening their hair in Japan. You have no idea why they have chosen to straighten their curls. Not everyone likes the way that they look with curly hair. Curly hair is also expensive and difficult to maintain for most women. Their are also limited resources for black women to use for styling their natural hair. There aren't a lot of places you can go to get your hair professionally done and there are limited over the counter products for black women to use from pharmacies and convenience stores for maintaining their curls. Not everyone wants straight hair because they want to be Asian or white. This topic is so hypocritical when you consider the fact that nearly every back woman in the world has either had a relaxer or straightened their hair at some point of their life. I personally wasn't allowed to relax my hair as a child and as someone with 3B-3C hair my hair is really easy to care for but I still prefer my hair straightened over curled. It is just a personal preference. I don't go around acting like I am better than others because I spent 22 years being natural compared to your 2-5 years BEFORE it became a trend on Instagram and YouTube. Mind your own curls!  Unless you plan to buy my hair supplies and style my hair then please don' tell me how to wear my hair. It is okay to tell someone that they should try to go natural or to recommend a stylist or products to use but don't become angry if someone chooses to do otherwise.

10. Stop Only Focusing on The Negative Things

I understand the want and need to express yourself. Having to bottle up your feelings and not feeling comfortable sharing your experiences and struggles with other white or Asian people is understandable too. I vent to people all the time on my YouTube channel and I am always telling my boyfriend and family about my bad days but there has to be balance.Venting is fine but let's talk about more than just the bad things here. I don't always want to focus on the bad things and racism here. I want to be happy too! We don't have to sugarcoat and brush our problems under the rug or ignore problems like racism and discrimination but we can have meetings, parties, dinner and conversations without the main topic just being about depressing things like bullying or the lack of black products in Japan etc.. Let's talk about the really good food that we had or the new black owned restaurant that just opened. Let's talk about a new drama that we saw on TV or a cool song that we found while eating lunch at McDonald's. Let's uplift each other by talking about positive and good things too. We can share recommendations and talk about the fun and cool things that we have seen here and make plans for places that we want to go here. We can address the struggles of life in Japan as a person of color but we can also spend a lot more time being happy and positive about the good things in our life too!

Thank you for reading! If you have any advice that you would like to share or complaints or problems that you would like to see resolved within the black community in Japan then please feel free to share your experience and please leave a comment below!

The 10 Most Common Backhanded Compliments That I Have Received as a Foreigner in Japan

After having lived in Japan for a few years I have heard a variety of ridiculous statements from Japanese strangers, friends and co-workers as well as some other Europeans and Asians too. As a rather unique foreigner living in Asia being not only foreign but a "light-skinned" black American woman I have been told things that are meant to be flattering and taken as a compliment but instead have come off as insulting degrading dehumanizing comical, and beyond ignorant. My race nationality, skin complexion, accent, and mannerisms have all contributed to these backhanded compliments that I have received.

You can watch my YouTube video on this blog's topic here...

The 10 Most Common Backhanded Compliments That I Have Received in Japan as a Foreigner

1.) "You're so beautiful because you're half/mixed!"
So I can't just be an attractive woman or an attractive black woman it is only because I have been purified and diluted with another race that I am beautiful. Gotcha!

2.) "You speak good Japanese because you're half (mixed)!"
Apparently it is impossible for a black woman to speak Japanese at a conversational level. It must be because I am half-Japanese.

3.) "You act very Japanese (your personality isn't American)!"
So only Japanese people are capable of showing empathy having good manners, being polite, being friendly, following the rules, and treating people the way that they'd like to be treated. Interesting!

4.) "I really like light-skinned black women."
So you really don't like dark-skinned black women? You only like me because my complexion isn't dark, but if I had been born with dark-skin my beauty would no longer be valid simply because it isn't as "light"?

5.) "You're beautiful because you're American (You must be American because you're so beautiful)!"
Are Africans not beautiful because they are not descendants of slaves who raped, tortured and murdered? My country is what makes me beautiful? IS it possible to weed out someone's country of origin based off of their level of attractiveness?

6.) "You're so strong!"
Apparently being black means I was built with natural muscles and I am made for handwork and labor. What a degrading and dehumanizing statement to make about someone. Sounds like something a slave master would say at an auction.

7.) " I wish I was half black so I could be a professional athlete."
There is nothing else that black people are good for huh? We're just here for your entertainment I suppose. Apparently being black or half-black is a new trait that they can add to the upcoming Sims game. I've been black all my life and I still haven't made it as a professional athlete.

8.) "I've always wanted to date/have sex with an American girl."
I've always wanted to have sex with a man that looked like an anime character!  Sounds a bit creepy right? Nobody wants to be used and checked off of your bucket list of places to go, things to do and people to fuck.

9.) " I like foreign women because they like to have sex."
Now what if I told you I like Asian men because they have small dicks or don't expect sex. If you really believe that foreign women like sex then you're gonna be in for a big surprise because their are countless books tv shows, and counselor offices filled with women who don't.

10.) "I want to be friends with you so that I can improve my/learn English."
Because who wants to be friends with me right?! Sure I am okay with you only being friends with me based off of my first language and using me to advance in your career and to help you pass those college exams. Of course I don't mind teaching you English for free despite the fact that I make a living off of charging others for the exact same thing.

This list could honestly go on forever but these 10 statements are the ones that have been the most repetitive in my life. I am aware that these things are said out of pure innocence (almost all the time) and meant to be flattering, but nevertheless these statements are rooted in stereotypes, racism, and pure ignorance. I usually try my best to nicely correct people and kindly explain why it is not a compliment but rather somewhat of an insult the moment I hear or read such things but others times I simply ignore it or laugh it off in disbelief at what I was just told.

Have any advice to share or tips to give? Have a question? Please share your experience with interacting with Japanese people and receiving backhanded compliments or if you are someone who has mistakenly made such statements please feel free to share your experience as well.

10 LIES THAT YOU BELIEVE ABOUT JAPAN

With the increase of social media usage and coverage people are coming more and more interested in Japan thanks to manga, anime, J-pop, J-fashion, travel channels and of course porn. With so much weird and crazy stuff being seen and shown to us everyday about Japan, it is natural for people to have misunderstandings about it's culture and people.

It is easy to go to YouTube or watch the news and come to the conclusion that Japanese people are sexless robots who marry vocaloids, live in dwarf homes, eat 1 piece of sushi, and a table spoon of rice for every meal but this is simply not true!

It goes both ways as most Japanese people think that all foreigners are rude, fat, tall, lazy, hamburger enthusiast, and shoot people with AK47's for fun.

If you have time and hate to read then you can watch the video for this post on YouTube as well.

10 LIES THAT YOU BELIEVE ABOUT JAPAN

YOU KNOW NOTHING FOOL!!!

1.) Japanese salary men are hard workers.

They're really not... They are often times socially obligated to stay at work until they're senpai and managers leave in order to appear as hard workers and to show their dedication to their "work fam". Most of these salarymen only work from 9:00am-6:00pm and they have a 1 hour lunch break. They are typically given the freedom to use their phones and computers (although like any work place its supposed to be for work and their usage shouldn't interfere with getting stuff done on time). After 6:00pm most of them are just browsing their social apps and liking pictures and watching videos. They will commonly play around at their desks, work on stuff slowly, or even play in the bathroom to kill the time until their boss is ready to go.
They will often times be invited to hang out with their boss and coworkers. They can usually say no and some of them do. However it is difficult to reject these kinds of invites as it will make you look as though you aren't a team player.
If most men worked such ridiculous hours there wouldn't be a rush hour until midnight but if you lived here you'd see a steady flow or salarymen and career women from about 5:30pm-8:00pm and 7:30am-9:30am every weekday.
So it's a partial lie. Yes they're at work sometimes for ridiculous hours but they're not actually physically working and definitely not doing anything hard or tedious while they're there but of course nobody wants to be trapped at their job all day.

2.) Japanese people don’t like sex.

They absolutely love sex (especially men)! However a lot of women seem to think that men don't. There's a disconnect somewhere as the biggest complaint men have about their women here is that their partner withholds sex (particularly after getting married and having kids).

Also casual sex is not as commonly done here in comparison to Europe and America. People work long hours so their simply isn't the time or money to have or pay for it.
Couples don't normally have sex early on in a relationship and casually having a fling, while it does happen here, it is not something that most women are willing to do unless they're a gaijin hunter and trying to please their foreign boyfriend (because they think this normal in America which it is not).
They love sex but it's hard to find the time, space and money for it. Prostitutes exist here and it's a big business and industry just like porn here is.
Women revery materialistic (even more so than in America) so if you didn't graduate from a prestigious university, you don't have a good career, and you're not fashionable or very attractive most women will have no interest in dating you. It's hard to have sex when you work all day, and you don't have all of the above stuff.
Not to mention a lot of young people live with their parents until they get married because they can easily save money by cutting back on the majority of their bills since their mothers will clean and cook for them and their fathers will pay the bills for the house etc. asking for a very small contribution if not anything at all from their kids.

Times have changed here just like they have in the U.S. People are marrying later on in life to focus on finishing school, traveling the world, and starting their careers  before making permanent decisions such as starting a family.
Japan is over populated. Their isn't enough space here on this little island for everyone to even have a small house. A reduction in it's population isn't going to be all that bad in the distant future but of course in the meantime this is problematic for running businesses and the economy etc.
Anyway my point is that people do like sex and are having children but not as early and as frequently as Americans do. I'm sure this all contributes to the significantly lower number of single parent households and  STD cases as well...

3.) Japanese people don’t like black people.

While it is true that most Japanese people (just like any other race of people) generally prefer white people over black people there is not a huge dislike or hate for people simply because they have dark complexions etc.. As long as you are visually attractive here people will like you just as much if not more than your white counterparts.

Everyone has their own taste in men and women. Attractive is attractive. Most people here don't have a real racial preference but they haven't seen or met enough black people to form a real opinion of them. Most of the black people here are Africans who are middle aged and purposefully poke fun at themselves at the expense of their race in exchange for money (no shade...). When people think of black people they think of the African touts who harass them in major cities, or they think of the comedians from TV whereas most of the white people in the media here are actors in commercials or models who are displayed as being sexy beautiful people with light colored eyes and hair. People always want what they don't have and find whatever is most rare within their race to be the standard of beauty. For example, small noses, light skin, colored eyes, long hair, and lose curl patterns are all sought after in the black community. Japan is no different! Big eyes, white skin, light colored eyes and hair, curvaceous bodies, and tall men are seen as beautiful here.

You will be judged on an individual basis so don't worry! I am black myself and while my skin may be lighter than most, I am still seen as a black woman here and I still have large features. I am constantly complimented on my complexion and lips. I look "exotic" as they say and I am constantly compared to Rihanna (whom I look nothing like).

4.) You have to bring a gift for everyone.
Nobody is expecting you to bring a gift from your home country, but it is a nice gesture if you do choose to do so. Only your homestay or a pen-pal should be getting a foreign goodie from you NOT everyone that you interact with for the first time. They know that this is a "Japanese thing" so it's not expected of you just like they aren't offended by you eating ramen with a fork haha.

Most Japanese people just buy green tea Kit-Kats or pocky when they visit foreign countries to meet their friends and when they bring gifts from travel within Asia or even Japan they simply buy cookies, crackers, or small chocolate candies.
Don't over think your gifts! Something small and simple (preferably that's edible) is all you need to buy.
It shouldn't be big, bulky, lavish or expensive. If it is, you'll make them feel obligated to buy you something like that which is kinda rude.

5.) Most Japanese people can’t speak English.

Most of them can both speak and write some basic English but they're really shy and humble about it. This is mostly because unlike Europeans and other Asians, they tend to not be native fluent English speakers thus they will downplay their English abilities.

6.) You need to be fluent in Japanese in order to work or attend a Japanese university.

You most certainly do not. People here will assume that you can't speak Japanese and will accommodate you (even if you can). I am still not a pro at Japanese. I am still studying and I am not confident enough to consider myself as fluent, but I now know enough to get by. I came to Japan with no knowledge of anything. I couldn't even read and write hiragana and katakana. I didn't know basic words or even how to count in Japanese. I learned a lot from living here, making friends, working, dating and interacting with staff at stores.

Don't stress out over your language skills. All of the major Japanese colleges here offer 4 year courses in English and there are American and European schools that have campuses her win Japan that are entirely in English.

You don't need to speak Japanese to work in Japan. You can become an English teacher in Japan even if you're not a native English speaker. You can do other jobs in Japan such as IT, customer service, restaurant work etc. as well. Of course your options are limited but you will learn Japanese overtime as long as you make an effort to study and avoid being in the "gaijin bubble".

7.) Japanese portions are small.

While the meat portion is noticeably smaller in most circumstances the addition of larger portions of soup, rice, tea, and random vegetables and fruit will not only make you feel satisfied or full but it is much healthier for you than a large meat portion. You won't feel like you're being put on a diet or starving to death here after eating a normal Japanese style meal. I have never left a restaurant or purchased a bento and felt hungry (and I am a greedy pig at heart).

8.) The cost of living in Japan (groceries, utilities, rent) is very expensive.

Japan is very cheap in comparison to America especially if you live alone and don't have any children. Housing is not only more affordable, but you will get a better location too. The proximity of your home to public transit, shopping, work, tourist destinations etc. is unmatched. As for groceries, as long as you're not still cooking foreign meals such as American or European dishes, or eating large amounts of fresh fruits then you will find that food isn't all that expensive. You can still eat healthy of course but you should consider buying items that aren't being imported and that goes for fruits & nuts too not just American junk food!
Your utilities are very cheap in comparison to the U.S since you will have a much smaller space there isn't central heating, having guests or parties not really a thing here, and you'll be at work or school most of the day. My bills are never more than about $100 USD total but they're general $4-$60 USD. Most apartments here offer some free utilities such as water & gas or they will cover your internet & cable costs.

9.) Japanese men don’t like foreign women.

You're right they don't like foreign women. They love them! Most men here dream and fantasize (*cough cough* and fetishize) about being with a foreign woman. They are seen as significantly more attractive not just physically but emotionally. One of the biggest reoccurring complaints that men have about Japanese women is that they are childish, easily angered, and passive. On the other side they also complain that they all have the same body type and make bad sexual partners.  I am not agreeing with this statement nor am I disagreeing with it. I am simply telling you what my friends and dates have told me.

10.) You can’t buy plus-size clothing in Japan.

Obviously the smaller you are and the less you weigh the easier it will be for you to go shopping here both in store and online. However don't be fooled! There are tons of overweight and obese men and women here. Japanese people aren't genetically thin but they don't eat as much meet, they drink more water and tea and they do light exercise everyday by walking, running and riding their bikes everywhere everyday.
Anyway you can buy plus size clothing here are speciality stores just like you can in America. If you are above a size 16 in America you also can't shop at most "normal" clothing stores. Japan is no different. You options will be limited, but I don't see it as being much different besides the fact that plus size here starts at a much lower size about a U.S size 8-10 (in my opinion). Again if you are over a size 10 you will have difficulty finding clothing in a regular store (that's not western such as F21) just like a size 18 woman would have trouble finding clothing in an American clothing store that isn't marketed/aimed towards plus-size women. You will have to shop at stores that cater to larger women here too! There aren't many (same as America) I'd say theres less than 10 well known stores here but you can always find small sections with plus-size clothing, order special sizes online, or buy clothing from overseas. You will inevitably lose weight here because you will be forced to exercise everyday and you may find that you're eating here less often for the fun of it and more out of necessity. I personally loss a lot of weight within my first year of being here before I even started to diet.

Have any more lies that you'd like to add to this list? Please feel free to leave a comment down below and help out another foreigner who is planning to live abroad.  I will be making a separate post with some more lies that are commonly believed.

The 13 Different Types of Foreigners That You'll Meet in Japan

The 13 Different Types of Gaijin You’ll Meet

If you've been living in Japan for over a year then you are bound to have come across some pretty strange foreigners both online and in person. Here's a list of 13 different types of gaijin residing in Japan.

1.) The Wise Fool

He’s been in Japan for over 10 years and tells you how Japan is so horrible, but also says that he’s not leaving and just wants to bitch about everything he doesn’t like here which seems to outweigh the list of non-existent things that he does like by far. You have no idea why he is still living here if he really feels this way about Japan. You are shocked that he has the audacity to advise and indirectly encourage you to hate Japan, give up and just go home. You wonder if maybe he’s hiding something or if maybe he’s just trying to have Japan to himself. This guy seriously needs to take his own advice or get over it.

2.) The Inferior Gaijin

This foreigner talks down on their home country whenever he finds the opportunity to do so. I’m not just talking about politics but  this guy is total “yes-man” for Japan and agrees that everything in his home country is just wrong and disgusting and needs to be advised by the superior country that is Japan The Great. He will argue that all Japanese people are super nice, polite and friendly unlike the assholes he dealt with back at home.  He believes that he deserves every bad thing that has happened to him here and justifies all hate and racism that Japan has towards non-Japanese  people or those of different religious and sexual preferences, that is if he is even willing to acknowledge that bad, rude, and racist things have ever happened to him or people that he knows in the first place!
He will tell you that Japan is so clean and that his home country is filthy. Fat people in Japan?! WHERE?! He will insist that you’ve got to be talking about the greasy burger eating people of America  who shop at stores that sell guns and toilet paper right next to Plan B, coat hangers, alcohol, medicine and diapers. He will tell you that all of the women in his home country are all fat and lazy feminists who will drain your bank account and trap you with a baby or a sexless marriage, you know things that Japanese women DEFINITELY don’t do. He can’t stand it when he sees or hears Japanese people “Oooh” and “Ahhh” over foreigners. He simply can’t understand why the Japanese don’t realize that he and his people are inferior to the greatness and beauty of Japan and it’s people.
You could have sworn that you heard him say “ALL HAIL JAPAN!” at some point.

3.) The Party Animal

Is there a birthday? No. Is it a holiday? NOPE! But there is now! This foreigner is always planning parties or attending them. They know people who know people and they’re a true social butterfly. They waste no time to have fun and party. You thought Japanese people didn’t use Facebook but this guy is always sending you screenshots and links to random parties at exclusive and super cool locations year around. He’s fun to talk to and looks out for his friends. He somehow manages to take great pictures and videos, make friends, and lookout for his drunk buddies while still indulging in all of the fun, food, drinking, and games. He somehow seems to know everyone. This guy has connections and he’s not afraid to share them with you.

4.) The Depressed Daytime Junkie

This foreigner seems to always have a can of strong zero in their hand, look as though they haven’t seen a shower in years, and smell as though they have bathed in an onsen of sake. This guy is usually a recent divorcee or a reject from a gaijin/Japanese rock band. They tend to be either really nice and outgoing or really rude and quiet. You feel sorry for this guy and you wonder how much his liver and kidneys are gonna be abel to take before he ends up cremated and buried in some gaijin grave or worse. You have no idea why he has decided to stay in Japan but you also admire his bravery for choosing to fight for his dreams anyway and find his own purpose and reasoning to stay.

5.) The Peasant

No matter what time of the year it is, even if it’s in the middle or at the end of the month and payday just passed this silly foreigner always claims to be broke and wants to mooch off of everyone or guilt trip you into covering the cost of their food, fun, drinks, and games. They aren’t ashamed to beg and have mastered their indirect theatrical performance.
They usually never pay you back and are nowhere to be found once their alleged payday arrives. They always seem to have an excuse or some sad story for why they need your financial assistance. While they may lack money of their own they have no problem spending yours and their taste tends to be rather expensive for someone who is at the mercy of others generosity. Despite their claims of poverty they seem to always be going out to bars and parties every weekend.  You have no idea how they were able to come to Japan since they’re always broke and you wonder what exactly is it that they’re spending their salary on because you’ve never seen them spend more than a 500 yen.
While they may be nice and a good listener their begging can becoming super annoying.
You’ve probably had to remind them that beggars can’t be choosers or simply avoid making plans in their presence.

6.) The Radicals

Whether it be a Republican or a Democrat this misinformed foreigner has an agenda and it usually doesn’t align with Japanese culture at all, but they will find a few  “Japanese things” that seem to match their political beliefs and run with it insisting that any gaijin who disagrees is in the wrong country and should pack their bags and go back to their home country. They will assure you that Japanese people love Trump because of comments that Japanese politicians have made unaware of how that statement alone is a joke within itself as Japanese most people here hate Abe and make fun of his presidency commonly asking if you voted for him as an icebreaker). They will tell you that Japan loves gay people because Sailor Uranus & Neptune are anime staples. They will argue that if Japan wasn’t pro LGBT then their wouldn’t be any gay bars or parades despite the fact that these places and events are filled with 70% foreigners and even straight people. They believe that Japan wouldn’t have hal

7.) The Yellow Fever Playboy

This foreign guy came here for 1 thing and one thing only that is hot Asian girls. They don’t usually care if she's Chinese, Japanese or just “nese” if she’s Asian he’s ready to be a douche bag, make her fall in love, and then of course hit it and quit it! This guy has an annoyingly ridiculously large ego and is well aware that his foreign and exotic look and features are sure to help him score with chicks that wouldn’t give him the time of day in his home country. Despite the fact that he’s the same height of the average woman has 3 kids in home country, is a married/ or a divorcee, and has a receding hair line at the age of 24 He brags about being too big for Japanese condoms and pokes fun at his Asian male counterparts lack of confidence with women. He is bursting at the seams with confidence. His phone is always going off with messages from desperate women and he’s always going out every night with what seems to be a different girl every week.
You think to yourself how has he not gotten someone pregnant yet? He is often times the life of the party but his douchey ways are sure to catch up with hi,m.

8.) The Professional Cock Slayer

Whether she be the most basic and average looking chick, or actually a little cute this foreign girl has an inflated ego thanks to the lack of foreign women in Japan and the even smaller number that are single, childless and willing to date an Asian man. She knows that no one can compete with her visible or not so visible beauty. She clearly has no shame in her game. She will constantly brag to you about how many men she’s slept with in Japan. After hearing her nasty story about that guys she sucked in the bathroom at the Hub you regret sharing that big can of Strong Zero with her and wonder if you may have contracted herpes from being a little too generous. You honestly have no idea why she’s taking so many chances.
She is confident and fierce. She knows what she wants in bed and she doesn’t give a crap about what you think or say about her or her decisions. She always has some crazy story about her sexual encounters from a sleazy nights out at the bar or that host guy that super liked her on Tinder whose dick she sucked backwards. She’s fun and entertaining to be around, but sometimes her overconfidence and kinky bedtime stories can be a bit annoying and the truthfulness of them can be rather questionable.

9.) The Foreign Japanese Supremacist

This blind foreigner has no idea that they too are and always will be a gaijin in the eyes of a “pure” Japanese. They believe that they are elite enough to have leveled up from gaijin to native. They believe that they are indeed a Japanese.
They  are disgusted by the existence of other tourist & foreigners alike. They will avoid sitting next to them on trains at all costs. They don’t want to talk to or befriend them and will try their best to maintain a circle of Japanese friends and sexual partners only.  They hate the thought of teaching English or doing “gaijin jobs”. These foreigners will often pretend to not speak English and will insist that they only communicate with the elite gaijin who have also become Japanese and thus they can speak Japanese well enough to converse. They have become so elite that they will pretend to have forgotten English, will tell you that they’re from Tokyo or Osaka (whichever city they first arrived to Japan in), and insist that they can’t remember or relate to the city or it’s people from their country of origin. These elite gaijin often times exclude themselves from any news, media, or articles that they watch or read about non-Japanese people because umm…DUUUHH! They’re not a foreigner silly!

10.) The Japanologist

It’s Not Wumbology it's Japanology! You probably didn’t know that this was a real word but this Japanologist knows that it is in Europe ! This intellectual gaijin insists that they know everything about Japan. They tend to follow all of the Japanese news and social media blogs and heavily moderate and educate people in the comments.
They will disagree with you on anything you say unless it’s exactly what they’ve already said. They believe that they have read more than enough books, had enough experiences for a life time from their study abroad 5 years ago, and lived in Japan for long enough to know more about Japan than the country and even it’s native people do.
They are often times experts on Japanese law and both know and obey more rules than most Japanese people do themselves.
This scientist slash historian is disgusted by the ignorance of foreigners who don’t know the laws and cultural differences of Japan. They thrive off of correcting the mistakes of other foreigners. They will notice if your kimono is being worn incorrectly, if you’re not holding your chopsticks high enough, and if you wrote your kanji with the wrong stroke order.
This foreigner believes that chopsticks are better than forks and are the ultimate eating utensils just as much as they believe that they are and always will be smarter than you!
You will almost never see them ask any questions about Japan because obviously they already know everything so who could possibly teach or tell them something that they don’t already know?!

11.) The Wannabe Idol & Breakout Artist

This foreigner has big dreams! They are ready to take full advantage of the lack of rappers, musicians, foreign models, and actors. They usually have a huge ego and really believe that they look like a model, are beautiful, have great acting skills, and that their beats are original thanks to the locals and even agencies gassing them up for their Little Tikes xylophone beats, Insta thot photos, and dramatic soap opera acting skills.
They get a couple of gigs worth less than the average teaching salary and label themselves as a famous foreign freelance model, actor, or musician.  They think that being a soft porn actress is the equivalent to being a celebrity. They’re willing to work for very little to nothing as they simply want to see their name in flashing lights, on a DVD cover, have cool headshots and video footage from their 3 second commercial scene, or see their name written in the fine print of the credits for some mobile app game that they sold their tribal beats too.

12.) The Gaijin Gates

This foreigner is filthy rich! They have expensive taste and tend to spend money like it ain’t a thing! It’s yakiniku and mojito’s for this gaijin 7 days a week. If they see something that they want they buy it. Everything seems like a great gift for their friends and family back home. It seems like they're at the mall and the post office at least once a week to buy and ship souvenirs to their loved ones.
You have no idea why they came to Japan or how they’re making so much questionable money despite seemingly never being at work and always shopping or partying. You’re convinced that this foreigner is only working to maintain his visa status and to be of service to the country. Sometimes you wonder hmmm… is he affiliated with the Yakuza?
Despite the stereotypes he’s actually really nice, super generous, always willing to spot his broke friends, is very humble, and never brags.  You wonder if he’s just being generous because he doesn’t know what to do with all of that cash…

13.) The Visa Whore

Ahh last but not least we have the old fashion visa whore. This silly foreigner came to Japan with 1 of 3 goals in mind. They either wanted to live in Japan, have a mixed baby, or fulfill their yellow fever dreams. With no hesitation this foreigner packed their bags and sold their souls to their partner of less than a month to beat the system. They’ll insist that they always move fast in their relationships and that they both wanted the same thing (to cover their back of course).
This foreigner often times lacks a degree, isn’t a native speaker, is obese, balding, or quite old in age. They’re ready to put their exotic gaijin looks to work in exchange for long-term residency. Luckily for this gaijin the feeling is mutual. Most Japanese people admire foreign men and women and consider them  to be significantly more sexual attractive, and romantic than their Asian counterparts.

Unfortunately faking pregnancies and “conveniently accidental condom malfunctions and holes *cough cough* are common everywhere in the world and so is divorce and child kidnappings. Sadly Japan is no exception. I mean HEY?! Who says that two can’t play at this game? Looks like it’s gonna be a visa exchange after all!

I think that we've all been guilty of doing at least a few of these things on the list. I can be the first to admit that I'm guilty myself! The longer you live here the more you will see and read from some pretty crazy and cool people. I'll be making video to go along with this post soon so be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel for more!
